There were lots of activities for the younger members during half term – a pan-cake day and painting with vegetable shapes for the really young, martial arts for the next age group and for the more adult population bridge classes! All these activities were enjoyed and some of them are ongoing. It is also hoped there may be a longer martial arts course in the summer if some funds can be raised to subsidise one evening a week. Outline plans for the new hall were shown and discussed at the Wine and Cheese evening on 23 February and will be displayed in the village hall. We were delighted with the positive feedback and interest shown by the villagers who attended. The meeting also spent time considering the future structure of Project Bawdeswell. We need to become a more formal group, rather than the willing band of concerned villagers we are currently. We are part way there with an agreed Constitution but it looks like we are going to have to get more tied up with red tape!! We must take advantage of reclaiming the tax paid on any gifts we receive and to meet the requirements of funders who want to be sure they are making grants to bona fide organisations. We are very pleased that William Mason has agreed to join us to help with this. The next steering group meeting will be on Saturday 25th April at 10am at the village hall. Join us and hear all about the various work streams and share your ideas with us. It was first published in 1977 but is set a decade or so earlier, and was one of the first feminist novels. It created quite a stir when it was published and it created quite a stir among our members. Some gave up after 3 or 4 chapters so fewer members than usual had read the complete book. However, this did not affect our discussion, which was lively. Everyone has strong opinions, emotions and ideas on the male/female relationship!! The book is basically divided into 2 parts, and follows the life of one woman, Mira. The first part charts her marriage and early years of motherhood and the mundane, non-aspirational lives she and her female neighbours lead as American housewives, but with a strong bond with each other. In the second half she is a single woman again and at Harvard as a mature student where her female friends, again with a strong bond with each other, are aspirational and analyse and question issues and ideas, but who are still coming up against the female role of subordination when it’s a choice between his career or her career. There is a little hope for the future, Mira has introduced her two sons to a wider perspective of the human role, but she resigns herself to a teaching job at a minor college and to life alone. We all agreed that, thankfully, the lives of most women have improved since that time. MM The Book Club meets in the Workhouse Bar on the first
Thursday of every month at the new time of 8 pm. New members are always welcome. We mostly obtain books from the library so
there is not the expense of buying new books each month. We are reading The Road Home by Rose
Tremain for our next meeting on 2nd April. BAWDESWELL FOOTBALL CLUB. Following their excellent 2007/8
season Bawdeswell FC is now looking forward to challenging for the Division 3

of Bawdeswell Church The response for tickets to the quiz night held on the 7th March was overwhelming and we had a packed hall. The scores were close throughout the night but the winning team, headed by Edwin Speakman, from Lyng beat us all at the end. Well done. The food, as usual, was excellent and much enjoyed. Our thanks to everyone who supported this event and of course to those who organised, cooked and washed up afterwards. These fund raising events wouldn’t be so successful without our loyal supporters. We have the quarterly Coffee Morning and Draw on Saturday 4th April. The next big event will be the Flower Festival in May. Full details can be found elsewhere in the magazine on when it is to be and how you can sponsor it if you wish to remember a loved one. We will be looking for volunteers to man the church, bake cakes and serve refreshments. If you feel you can help out or would like to be involved in any way please contact any member of the Friends committee, Sandi and Robin Taylor, Susan and Nicholas Ward, Angela and David Shannon, Sue Lilwall, James Lilwall and Peter Jervis. The more help we have the more successful the weekend will be. Contributions towards the cost of the flowers from the whole community are being asked for. Please hand in to any of the Friends Committee named above.
BAWDESWELL PARISH COUNCILDIGEST
OF THE MEETING HELD ON 2 MARCH 2009 Present: Councillors Shannon, Mason, Beane, Cockburn, Kirby, Mallen, Mr G Bambridge, C Boer and 7 Parishioners Apologies: Councillor Lilwall and I Floering-Blackman Adams Pit: Since the last PC meeting, Highways have conducted camera inspections of the area but had found no evidence of any drain from the Pit. A meeting will now be held on 9 March with S Simpson from Highways to discuss the creation of a new drain from Adams Pit. A meeting with Ed Stocker, Ecologist from Norfolk County Council, and members of the PC has also taken place to discuss the longer term refurbishment of Adams Pit. It was agreed that the best plan of action would be to refurbish Adams Pit into 3 phases: first, to solve the current drainage problem; second, to improve the safety boundaries around Adams Pit and, finally, to enhance the wildlife habitat and public access to the area. The PC are currently obtaining quotes and plans from 3 contractors for the refurbishment work, and these plans will be available for parishioners to peruse at a future PC meeting. Ongoing
Issues from Previous Meetings Community Car Scheme: A meeting between Breckland officials, coordinators and drivers took place on the 19 Feb. A few minor issues arose as a result of that meeting which are now being resolved by the Clerk and Breckland officials. Appropriate CRB, driving licence, insurance and medical checks of the volunteers are also underway. Drivers will also undertake some first aid training. The CRB checks are likely to be the holding factor in the launch of the scheme, but it is hoped to open the scheme for business on or soon after 1 May 2009. Highways Outstanding Work: The new zig zag barrier at the end of Billingford Rd had now been erected, and Highways Ranger team has been busy in the village undertaking minor highways repairs. Community Speed Watch – The training date for volunteers is still scheduled for 23 March, and the launch of the scheme will follow shortly thereafter. The PC would like to thank the volunteers already committing time to this scheme and remind any other parishioners interested in joining the Community Speed Watch team to contact the Clerk for further details. 8.3 Folland Court Update: Flagship Housing have confirmed the street lights in Folland Court should be reconnected in the next couple of months, and the contractor is working hard to re-open the public footpath through the site as soon as possible. The PC should soon be in receipt of the landscaped drawing for the land to be transferred to the PC following completion of the Folland Court development. This will assist the PC in discussions of the future use of this land fronting on to The Street. Parishioners are invited to forward any suggests to the PC for consideration. Correspondence The PC was invited to forward comments to Breckland District Council by 30 March, on the additional sites for Bawdeswell proposed in the Local Development
Framework Sites Specific Study.
Details of these sites are currently displayed on the PC and village
shop notice boards. The PC’s comments on the sites are as follows:- Site (004)008 – The PC will continue to oppose major development of this site and would not wish to see the current Settlement Boundary extended to encompass it. However, if there was an overriding demand for additional affordable/social housing within the village, the PC might look more favourably on a limited number of such houses being built along the northern edge of this site as an exceptional planning application. Site (004)009 – The site is not within the Settlement Boundary but is partially within the Conservation Area. The PC also has concerns about access to and from this site. The PC therefore supports the view of Breckland officials that this site does not conform with Breckland planning policy for Bawdeswell. Site (004)011 and Site (004)012 – The PC supports Breckland Council’s general opposition to back garden in-fill developments. Planning PA 3PL/2009/0121/F: Resubmission of Plans to Extend Robinia House - no objection raised by the PC. Any Other Business of Interest to Parishioners - a. Clerk commissioned to write to BT requesting that the telephone box in the Street be repainted. b. Clerk commissioned to ask the Handyman to replace the broken railway sleepers and tidy up the flower beds near the village sign. c. Concerns were raised about the state of land between Hall Rd and Paradise Rd; the Clerk was commissioned to ask the owner of this land to cut the grass verges and to tidy up this land following recent episodes of fly tipping. The next meeting of the PC will take place on Monday 6 April 2009, at 7.45pm in the Village Hall.

871064 Our meeting commenced tonight with the reading of last month’s minutes and then Margaret spoke about forth-coming events amongst the regions WIs including the Cathedral Service to celebrate the WI’s 90 years in Norfolk. Our members were eagerly anticipating spring with our talk tonight on fuchsias by Frank Lambert. Frank gave a fascinating talk on growing and showing fuchsias, including hints on using empty storage vessels. Did you know that a glass jam jar, used upside down, with a small cutting in a pot nestled in the lid becomes a mini propagator? We didn’t, and members were busy taking notes for future reference. Another tip – use the body of a plastic water bottle painted black, over the plant to encourage a long main stem, when growing standard fuchsias! We were shown how to take cuttings and then grow on the plants. Frank then showed slides of some of his fabulous award-winning exhibition plants and gave an insight into just how time consuming it is to prepare a plant for a flower show. During the refreshments we were able to ask Frank more questions about our own fuchsia problems. Our meeting next month is on 20th April at 7.30 pm when the speaker is Claire Hill talking about ‘Painting in Africa’, and the exhibit is a souvenir of Africa. We hope to see you then. Christine Rushbrook Wensum Valley Birdwatching Society Indoor meeting:- Warden Jed Andrews and assistant warden Sophie Barker, from the Holme Bird Observatory, were our guest speakers in a ‘two for the price of one’ night. First Sophie talked about trapping and recording moths. We learnt that there are over 3,000 species of moths in the UK. Many are becoming scarce such as the Wooly Bear and the stunning Garden Tiger Moth. We saw pictures demonstrating how both the moth and the caterpillar are masters of disguise, the Buff Tip, which looks like a twig and the Lunar Hornet moth which looks more like a hornet than a moth. After coffee Jed Andrews spoke about his 14 years as a warden at the Holme Reserve with a talk that encompassed ringing birds of prey, whale watching, sea watching, orchids and fungi. His tips on the differences between poisonous and non-poisonous mushrooms were of interest. He recalled an amusing incident when a pair of Puffins, rescued after a storm, were released from a box in front of a flock of press photographers. Instead of making a dash for freedom we saw a picture of them walking toward the sea like two old gentlemen on an afternoon stroll. Field
Trip – No field trip to report, instead I will put
in a plug for our outdoor trips. Ideal for beginners and experts alike. Each
trip is led by a club member and there are always experts on hand to help
sort out the species. We have binoculars for newcomers to try out.
Forthcoming trips, including a day at Minsmere, are

followed by a talk on ‘The Wildlife of the Falklands’ by David Osborn. At Weston Longville

RED CROSS Could you be there in a crisis for the Red Cross in your community? Do you have a few hours to spare to help
someone out with a bit of shopping and offer some emotional support? The British Red Cross helps vulnerable people in times of crisis, providing a range of services, on a short-term basis, across Norfolk. Home from Hospital (HfH) scheme volunteers provide care and support in the home for people after an accident or illness, giving them the confidence to continue their daily lives. We are currently looking to recruit volunteers in your area. Volunteering for the British Red Cross is a great way to learn new skills and make a difference to people’s lives. The HfH service is available to anyone on a short-term basis and is provided free of charge. As a HfH volunteer you decide what hours you commit to and how much you take on. A quote from a service user who has benefited from the HfH scheme: “The volunteer was such a tremendous boost, not only in a practical way but also because I knew there was someone there if I needed them.” If you are interested in becoming a volunteer for the HfH service or would like information on any of the other services the BRC offers, please do not hesitate to contact: (01603) 288320 Michael Emeney

Bring and buy a cake. ST.THOMAS’ CHURCH, FOXLEY As usual, at the February Meeting of the PCC, our thoughts were mainly focused on our financial position and the adoption of the Annual Accounts 2008, presented by the Treasurer, John Harvey. They were, in effect, very similar to those of 2007. We are a small congregation, but pay our way and are able to meet our yearly payment to the Diocese, largely used to pay our share of Clergy Stipends and Pensions. In addition we were able to find £888 (from Christmas and special collections), to help various Charities. Turning to the necessary renovations to the building, Mr. Harvey pointed out that, in the present financial circumstances, it was advisable for us to use the funds, which we had already saved, in the course of the next year or so, before inflation raised its ugly head again. Dr. Rushbrook said that, fortunately, we had already completed minor repairs, as advised by our architect, but the major ones - the porch and the roof and interior of the chancel - were still outstanding. We were most grateful to receive a donation of £2,000 from Brian Waters, in memory of his mother Joyce, our dear friend and Treasurer over many years. The family are very anxious that this be spent on the porch and gifts at Joyce’s funeral were also dedicated to this project, in particular to the inscription over the door – “I was glad when they said unto me let us go into the House of the Lord”. We all feel, that to improve the first impression of our church as people enter it, would be most worthwhile and demonstrate our commitment to our precious “House of the Lord”. Our very ancient church is featured in several church guide books, visited by church historians and enthusiasts; surely a building to be maintained to a standard of which we can be proud. Much fund- raising is obviously still necessary and we hope to organize as many events as possible. Unfortunately, the talk by the Head Gardener at Salle Park has had to be postponed. However:- Richard and Joan Parfitt are hosting a Coffee Morning at Pol-Na-Chess, Mill Road on Saturday, 6th. June. The Rushbrooks and Harveys are opening their gardens at Glebe House and Foxley Lodge, Old Fakenham Road on Sunday, 21st. June. We are planning a Harvest Supper in the Autumn. Easter Services:- Good Friday, 10th. April at 10-30 am. Easter Day, 12th. April at 10-30 am. Holy Communion. Diana Harvey, PCC Secretary

Church Council We had a packed church on 8th March for Choral Evensong, part the Deanery Lent Series of services . Our thanks to James Lilwall and members of Iceni choir who led the singing and gave us such inspiration. Due to the Rector’s illness the service was led by the Rural Dean, the Reverend Selwyn Tillett. The sermon on the subject of Jesus’ hands was delivered by Miss Susan Marsh. The annual general meeting of the Parochial Church Council will be held in the church on Tuesday 28th April at 7pm. Two weeks prior to this date the electoral roll will be revised. Details of the revision will be posted up on the church porch notice board. All parishioners are welcome to attend the meeting. The Post Office continues to have a good number of people supporting it. It’s nice to have the church used throughout the week. The over 60’s club meets there every Thursday afternoon and the Pebbles club one Saturday morning per month. The Iceni Choir are also meeting there regularly. ICENI CHOIR Spring

I hope to be back to full strength by the time that you read this, but I’ve been warned that it may take a bit longer. “You don’t know what it’s like till it happens to you.” That is something that people often say, and it’s pretty much true. There is a lot of stuff I know from books, and statistics, so that I can know the probability of things. And I’ve been told about other people’s experience of life, both good and bad, so that I can hear and imagine what it’s like, and be sympathetic and try to empathise. I can be aware that what happens to one person may happen to others. But personal experience is different. I had no idea that shingles could be so tiring. I now know that when someone says the word “Shingles”, I will be much more concerned for them. I didn’t imagine, or hear clearly from others, how it would be. But I’ve most often heard people saying “You don’t know what it’s like till it happens” about bereavement; usually, a bereavement that leaves them on their own. And one of the things that they notice is how much more quickly people who have not experienced significant bereavement expect them to be “better”, than those who have been through it. Easter time brings Christians hope. The thought of Jesus rising from the dead is comforting. But we won’t know what death will be like, till it happens to us. We won’t know what it will be like afterwards, till it happens to us. But there are stories…. Sometimes our experience is unique. But if something can happen to one person, it can happen to another. What we live through, and what others live through and tell us, can help us to imagine other people’s needs and hopes better. All that happens to us can help us to understand. God bless you.
