BAG and Project Bawdeswell
Occasionally, the question is
asked “What is Project Bawdeswell doing?”, and we thought that we should answer
that. Project Bawdeswell is not just about a new hall.
BAG is a direct result of
Project Bawdeswell. Apart from the children’s activities BAG has organised
Bridge lessons resulting in the formation of the JayCee
Bridge Club and table tennis evenings resulting in the formation of Bawdeswell
Table Tennis club that plays in a Dereham league. We
ran Rock at the Rec and plan another next July. We’ve
put on a film and another is being shown in January with discussion on a third
film in March. From May 2010 we are looking at the possibility of regular FREE
film showings including family films, children’s films and some of the old
classic films. Funding for this will come from the sale of refreshments.
The planned improvements to the
play area are a direct result of Project Bawdeswell.
Without Project Bawdeswell these events would probably not have happened.
13
The meeting on 3rd November dealt with a few
routine matters. The details of the new governance document for Project
Bawdeswell and the Village Hall still have to be finalised.
Play Area - We had our designs back from the play companies, and a group of
parishioners (mainly young people) looked them over – making notes of what they
liked and what they didn’t like. The
next step is to agree what Company (s) to use and let them get started. To be kept updated on this (and other village
events/news) log onto www.projectbawdeswell.org
however, more news will be in the February Reeve’s Tale.
At that meeting, the group of young people
officially formed BAGY
(Bawdeswell Activities Group Youth).
They will organise and run events, specifically to raise funds for the
play area. They are officially under the
BAG umbrella and Kelsey Baker and Fel Roberts will
oversee and help them wherever necessary.
Their first fundraiser is “Sunday Morning
Breakfast” to be held at the Bawdeswell Village Hall on Sunday 24th
January 2010 – to coincide with the National Farmhouse Breakfast Week. See main ad below. **if you are able to
provide any of the ingredients to help keep our costs lower, please contact
Kelsey 688401 or Fel 688876. Many thanks.
Project meetings are normally held at the Village Hall
at 10am on the last Saturday of each month (except December). All are welcome
to attend. The next meetings are scheduled for:-
28th November, 30th January and
27th February.

Countdown to Christmas
Christmas can be a busy time of year, especially for
your rubbish bin, and the last thing you want to be thinking about is
recycling!
So this year, Breckland Council want to say a big
thank you for all your recycling efforts.
On every recycling collection day in December, a recycling bin will be
picked at random, and if all the items in the bin can be collected through our
kerbside collection scheme, the lucky householder will receive a £20 shopping
voucher.
Here’s a quick reminder of the items which can go
into your black recycling bin:
·
Paper
·
Cardboard
·
Plastic bottles
·
Steel and
aluminium cans
·
Aerosol cans
So for the chance to receive a £20 shopping voucher,
all you need to do is continue recycling and placing your black bin out for
collection!
For more information about the Countdown to
Christmas, contact Environmental Services on 01362 656878.
MOBILE POLICE OFFICE
The Mobile Police Office will be in ‘The Street’
Bawdeswell 11am until 12.30pm every 4th Thursday.
This is intended to provide a ‘visible’ police
presence in the village. Please make sure that you visit them if you have a
problem or need information. Pop in and find out what’s happening in the area.
Dates for the first
half of 2010 are
14th
January, 11th February, 11th March, 8th April,
6th May & 3rd June
This is a good facility for the village. If the police
find that it is not being used then it will be withdrawn.
DIGEST OF THE PARISH COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON
Present: Councillors
Shannon, Cockburn, Beane, Lilwall, Mr B Borrett (County Councillor), C Boer and 3 Parishioners
Ongoing Issues from Previous
Meetings
Adams
Pit: The Trustees are currently finalizing the quote for
the creation of the drain and the bund on the Western side. This work will not commence until the results
of the wildlife survey, which is being conducted by The Norfolk Wildlife Trust,
to ascertain if Adams Pit is a habitat for great crested newts, have been
received. These results should be available by the end of November. The PC is mindful that this work needs to be
completed as soon as possible so that winter, for the fear that due to the
forthcoming months and the possible inclement weather doesn’t raise of the
water level with a repeat of flooding.
Unfortunately, no-one has answered the appeal last month seeking
volunteers to help burn the detritus from the tree surgery that has been
completed so far. Please, if anyone can
spare just a few hours one afternoon to help, contact the Parish Clerk.
Allotments: 2
more parishioners have expressed an interest in having an allotment should this
facility become available within the Parish, which brings the list of potential
allotment holders to 13.
New
Bus Stops: Following the letter to Norfolk County Council from
the Parish Council, detailing the concerns about the siting
of the proposed two additional bus stops in Bawdeswell, officials from NCC
Passenger Transport Group and Mott MacDonald, who are working in partnership
with Transport & Development at NCC, have agreed to meet with
representatives from the PC and Church to discuss other alternative locations
and/or the creation of wider pavements to permit safe access to an from the
bus. The Parish Council will suggest at
this site meeting the proposed bus stops should be sited near All Saints Court.
Planning
PA
3PL/2009/0610/F: Retrospective planning application for solar panels
at Beech Corner, The Street. The Parish
Council decided to support this planning application as it was deemed that the
solar panels are not obtrusive within the conservation area.
PA
3PL/2009/0799/F: 36 Reepham
Road, new conservatory; Planning Permission granted with 6 conditions. The Parish Council raised no objections to
this planning application.
Any Other Business of
Interest to Parishioners
Adoption
of The Red Telephone Box:
BT has invited the Parish Council to adopt the red telephone box in The Street,
which would result in the removal of the telephone facility and the ownership
of the kiosk structure would become that of the Parish Council’s. In response the Parish Council has written to
BT to express its disappointment that firstly the coin operated facility within
this telephone box has already been removed and while not ruling out the
possible adoption of the red telephone box in the future, would like to
reinforce the need for BT to recognize its sense of duty to the public,
particularly in small rural communities, and therefore the Parish Council are
opposed to any plans that BT might have to withdraw the public telephone
facility from the centre of the village.
Episodes
of Burglaries: Unfortunately some residents of Bawdeswell have
recently become victims of thieves steeling from their cars and gardens. The Parish Council would remind all residents
to be vigilant and ensure that they secure their vehicles and garden sheds
etc. Please do not give thieves easy
access to your personal belongings.
The date of next meeting is: Monday 7th December 2009 at 7.45pm
–
This meeting will include the finalization of the Precept
requirements for 2010-2011.

Allotment & Leisure Gardeners’ Association
On the dark wet evening of
Thursday 12th November some 20 dedicated villagers met at the village hall to
be advised by Karen Kenny, the regional representative of the ‘National Society
of Allotment and Leisure Gardeners’, on the best way to form an Allotment and
Leisure Gardens Association in Bawdeswell.
Karen is an enthusiastic and
inspirational speaker and
by the end of the evening the Bawdeswell Association had been
formed and affiliated to the National Society. Subs had been paid and
eleven of those gathered had been elected to form a committee.
Our aim is to pressure the
Parish Council to provide allotments, as soon as possible and also to encourage
gardening throughout our village.
New members will always be
welcomed. Please contact the secretary Jayne Bown on
688388 or email Jayne.Bown@NPS.CO.UK

Stables
The fund raising sale on the 17 Oct raised the outstanding sum of £505.00.
As always this could not have been achieved without all our supporters donating items for sale, organising and setting up the hall, assisting on the tables and clearing up afterwards and the tea ladies who also sold delicious home made cakes so generously donated by friends, to all of whom we and the horses extend our grateful thanks.
Once again it was a grand day and we hope everyone enjoyed themselves.
Unsold items have been donated to several charities which has spread your kind generosity to other good causes.
Thanks to you
all. Jean and Edie

Sparham Church
The Autumn Bazaar was held on Saturday 14th November in spite of strong winds and frequent heavy showers. Visitors were attracted to the well stocked stalls and welcoming refreshment counter. Prizes from the raffle were widely distributed and a profit of £ 272.71 was made for Church funds. Many thanks to all who helped in any way, also to those who came to support us. Mary Humphrey
Bridge Club
The JayCee Bridge Club has now been running for a couple of months, having been formed for people who have recently learned to play bridge, those who want to brush up rusty skills and others who just want to take the opportunity to play bridge in an informal atmosphere. The intention is that it will provide a venue where people can continually improve their skills and at the same time have an enjoyable and friendly game. More experienced players are generous with their time and patience!
We meet on alternate Wednesday evenings and Friday afternoons. As winter approaches and the nights are drawing in, we recognise that it may be necessary to review the viability of Wednesday evenings, but we would still aim to meet at least once a week.
December dates are: Wednesday 2nd & Tuesday 15th at 7.15 for 7.30 and Friday 11th at 2.30. On Fridays, we have a break for refreshments. Entry fee is £2.00 for either day. 2010 dates are Fridays 8th & 22nd January & 5th February, Wednesdays 13th & 27th January.
If you think that this might appeal to you, please do come along and see if it’s for you!
Call Roger Fryatt on 01362 688627 for more information.

BECK W. I.
After the tea / coffee break, Christine read the Annual Report and Carole went through the Financial Statement with us. Margaret Roy, standing in for Aleathia, led us through the procedure of voting for next year’s President, with the pleasing result that we are again fortunate in having Aleathia.
The committee remains the same: Carole, Christine, Jennifer and Margaret
Points for exhibits awarded throughout the year showed the winner to be Jennifer, 2nd Doris. We discussed arrangements for our Christmas Dinner on 14th December and our annual visit to Norwich’s Theatre Royal in early February 2010.

REEPHAM and DISTRICT ROTARY
Our regular Monday meetings continue and recently we have learnt about Norfolk Workhouses and cheese making from our speakers. At the end of September we enjoyed croquet and a hog roast at the home of Peter and Sally Day. Many of our meetings welcome our ladies as guests to enliven proceedings! And we look forward to our annual Christmas Dinner.
We are again providing the annual Christmas tree erected by members in the Market Square as usual at the end of November in time for the switch on at the Christmas in Reepham event on Wednesday 2nd December.

BAWDESWELL BOOK CLUB
Last month's
book was "The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas" by John Boyne. It won two
Irish Book Awards, was shortlisted for the British Book Award and has now been
made into a feature film. The book was generally enjoyed by all, with a few
negative comments about the naivity of the central
character, a nine year old German boy called Bruno. He is the son of a Nazi
Commandant who moved with his family to Auschwitz during WWII. He makes friends
with a boy called Shmuel, an internee of the camp and
they conduct a friendship either side of the electric fence. Both children are
oblivious to the atrocities going on around them. It culminates in Bruno
adopting the striped uniform worn by his friend and breaks into the camp, to
help Shmuel find his missing father. The tension
mounts as the boys are suddenly herded into the gas chamber. At the same time,
the Commandant is desperately searching for his missing son, Bruno. The
inevitable happens, the boys are gassed and the grim realisation then dawns on
Bruno's father. This is a simple story with a very powerful message.
Our book for next month is "Beloved" by Toni Morrison. We meet at The
Old Workhouse Bar on the first Thursday of each month at THE NEW TIME of 7.30 pm. New members welcome.

THE NORFOLK HOSPICE
Could
You Use £1,000 This Christmas?
How would you like to
win £1,000 and support your local hospice at the same time? Well, the Norfolk
Hospice, Tapping House is delighted to be able to offer you the chance to do
just that by joining our weekly lottery. With 33 prizes, ranging from £1,000 to
£10 you are 15 times more likely to win £1,000 in the Hospice lottery than you
are the National Lottery, while supporting the provision of vital care
throughout Norfolk and the Fens. “Our lottery is an excellent revenue stream
for the Hospice as it brings in a regular and consistent income, but more than
that it allows the Hospice to give something, in addition to our care
provision, back to the community who support us so generously” said Hospice
Fundraiser Andrew Lawn.
Friday is draw day,
and what better way to start your weekend than receiving a phone call from our
lottery department informing you a cheque for £1,000
is heading your way? Join our Hospice Lottery today and Fridays will never be
dull again. Also with our new ‘Lottery Gift Vouchers’ why not give a friend or
loved one the chance of winning £1,000 this Christmas? A great gift for the person who has
everything and for whom you can never think of anything original as a gift ~
The Norfolk Hospice, Tapping House Lottery is the answer.

The Norfolk Hospice - Tapping House, Snettisham (Reg. Charity No. 1062800)
Since 1984, the Hospice has been providing palliative care to people with cancer, neurological and other life-limiting conditions, to enable them to live life to the full for whatever time is left.
Our services include: holistic day care, home hospice support, bereavement support for families, regular carer support groups, transport, equipment loan and an information service.
We care for over 200 people a month at the hospice and at home. Our care is provided without charge throughout Norfolk and the Fens and it costs £1 million a year to run our Hospice. We serve a community stretching from Wisbech in the west to Dereham in the east and from Mundford in the south to Sheringham on the north Norfolk coast. We depend on the generosity of the community to survive: 85% our costs are paid for by the individuals, organisations and groups who give generously to support our vital care.
In life nothing is certain but, with your help, we can ensure that Norfolk and the Fens has the finest hospice care possible, now and in the future.

We shall shortly be in Advent and the lead up to Christmas. The PCC, as usual, at its November meeting, spent much time deciding which Charities to support this year. In view of the continuing horrific injuries suffered by our troops in Afghanistan, we have chosen “Help for Heroes” as the first one. The second, which we always think should be linked with children at this time of year, is “EACH” (East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices). We have supported their splendid work on several occasions in the past.
The collections at our Carol Service at 4.30 pm on Sunday 20th.Dec.and the Christmas Day 10.30am Service will be split equally between the two. Anyone who might not be at these Services, but wishes to give, please contact the Church Treasurer, John Harvey on T/N688650.

The Primary School held their Harvest Service in the church on 21st October and we look forward to welcoming them back on December 18th for their Christmas Service. It is always nice to have them visit the church and have so many mums and dads come along too.
We invite you to join us on Sunday 20th for the church’s Carol Service and Nativity, and on Christmas day for our Family GiG Service which is always a very festive occasion.
Leading up to Christmas we have a very special day on Saturday 5th December between 10am and 4pm when the local flower arranging class will be in the church making Christmas Wreaths for sale.
There will also be an art exhibition by two local artists, with pictures for sale, and there will be refreshments and other homemade goodies for you to buy.
And don’t miss the Annual Christmas Concert in the church at 4pm on Sunday 13th December. This year it features The Iceni Choir and a return visit of June Harrison and Susie Turner. The music will be from the films and shows and some carols for us all to join in.
This is a ticket only fund raiser event and will include mulled wine and mince pies.
Tickets from any of the Church Friends Committee or 01362 688499, or 688268.

From the Rector
Dear Everybody, hello again,
Christmas is a time when everybody is happy. Right? Well, no. Lots of people enjoy the whole thing hugely. For others, it can be a bit miserable.
We might be missing people. Some of us might be without a family member for the first time, or worrying about someone in the armed forces or in other kinds of danger. Those who live alone may feel that the world shuts down, and the people they meet in daily life suddenly go absent.
It can be a tense time in families, too. Routines can be disrupted; arguments can flare up. E-numbers or alcohol can make people’s behaviour difficult. Living spaces can become crowded, and if you’re not enjoying yourself it can be difficult to find your own space.
We might be remembering past Christmases. Maybe they were happier,
and we feel a bit let down. Or maybe they were traumatic, and the season brings back unwelcome memories.
Feeling that you ought to be happy can make it harder to be happy. If you feel that everybody else is having fun, it may intensify your disappointment. But if you go by the number of people who say they find Christmas difficult, your expectations may be more moderate. Just let happiness happen. Try and make it more likely by the things you choose to do, and your attitude, but don’t force it.
Celebrating the birth of Jesus should in theory make Christians happy – and many are. The idea that God values humanity so much is heart-warming. But nobody is shielded from life-events that can make us sad.
Do spread happiness this Christmas if you can, but be tactful. Those who find it a difficult time don’t want to experience the contrast between their happiness and yours; they’d probably prefer your kindness and friendship. Be gentle with them and yourselves.
God bless you this Christmas. David Head
