Vandalism in Bawdeswell

I am becoming, as are many others in the village, increasingly frustrated by the continuing vandalism in the village, especially that at the village hall. Thousands of pounds of damage have been caused to our village hall windows and, although we have insurance, we will have to pay some hundreds of pounds for the insurance excess. This will result in proposed improvements to and refurbishment of the hall being postponed. We will also have to consider the costly installation of CCTV at the hall and recreation ground to deter these mindless actions.

I appeal to the residents of Bawdeswell to help stamp out this plague in our village. If you have any knowledge of who is responsible please contact the local police (0845 4564567) or call Crimestoppers (0800 555 111) or speak to the Parish Clerk in confidence.

Bawdeswell Post Office

Hopes that a village would get a long-awaited post office as part of a new housing development look set to be crushed.

For years residents of Bawdeswell had been banking on a Peddars Way Housing association scheme providing the village with a post office after the previous one closed down.

In 2005 Breckland Council approved a planning application from Peddars way to build affordable housing at Folland Court providing certain conditions were met – including a post office being rebuilt on the land.

But work never started because no one could be found to run it, and funding for the whole scheme could be lost unless building starts soon.

So now Peddars Way is asking the district council to lift the condition.

A spokesman for Breckland Council said: “We understand the importance of Post Offices to rural communities.  It is unfortunate that, despite the best efforts of Peddars way, the parish council and the local elected member, it has not been possible to find anyone who would be willing to take on the running of a new post office.

“Even after the cabinet meeting, if someone steps forward soon to give a commitment to run the new post office, Peddars Way will build it.”

STILL ALL QUIET on the Banham Front

Broadland District Council has still not issued a Pollution Prevention and Control Permit to Banham Compost Limited for their Gt Witchingham plant and so Banhams remain unable to start rendering. This also makes lodging an appeal against the refusal of planning permission for the existing building difficult. Time is ticking away as an appeal needs to be lodged by mid August. Any news on the permit before the next edition of this magazine will be on NO Stink Campaign posters. So watch-out at the usual places.

MATTHEW PROJECT

Norfolk based drug and alcohol charity The Matthew Project has received funding from Comic Relief to provide a specialist Young People’s service in Norfolk market towns targeting those at risk of developing or already experiencing problems with alcohol.  Two youth workers, Sophie Burnett and Martin Torpey, specializing in alcohol harm reduction, will provide information, advice, one-to-one and practical support for young people to help them make informed choices about and reduce the harm caused by alcohol misuse to themselves, their families and the community.

As part of this service the Matthew Project will be bringing their mobile ‘Voicebox’ unit to Stimpsons Piece (skate park) in Reepham every Friday evening from June to August, 5.30-7.30pm.  The caravan will provide a safe welcoming meeting place for young people where they can take part in activities, have refreshments and receive information and advice on alcohol and other issues. There will also be detached youth work in the Bawdeswell and Cawston area to inform young people of the service.

The Matthew Project is grateful for the positive encouragement they have already received from the Parish Council, Safer Neighborhood Team and local residents.

For more information, or if you are concerned about a young person, please call Sophie or Martin on 0845 868 8172.  The Matthew Project also has a 24/7 confidential helpline: 0800 764 754. www.matthewproject.org

BECK WI

Aleathia welcomed members, two guests, and last but by no means least, our speaker Anita Carpenter to our June meeting.

Before showing us slides, Anita told us of the history of tapestry and needlepoint, and we were amazed to hear that records show tapestry was woven in 1483 B.C. Some of the slides were of Anita's own beautiful work but the majority were taken of tapestries in N.T. houses, Blickling and Hardwick Hall etc. A most interesting talk.

Anita judged the pieces of needlework brought in by members, 1st Christine, 2nd Ruth. The raffle was won by Doris.

Forthcoming events were discussed and Aleathia spoke of the National A.G.M. she had attended in Liverpool. Our next meeting is on Monday 14th July at 7.30.p.m. when David Morton talks about the Heydon Estate.

The exhibition is an Old Cooking Aid. Hope to see you all.         Mary Humphrey

BAWDESWELL ACTIVITIES GROUP (BAG)

News – Plans are now being made for activities during the Summer Holidays. We will be open each weekday afternoon from the 4th to the 29th August excluding the Bank Holiday on 25th August. (Don’t forget that the ‘Summer Club’ at Sparham runs from 28th July to 1st August - see page 5 for details)

This year we will try and have a specific activity/event (some may be weather dependant) each day. It is intended this year that, as far as possible, all the activities run by BAG, including materials, will be free of charge although small donations towards the costs will be welcomed. The activities are open to all residents of Bawdeswell, Foxley and surrounding villages. For some activities the numbers may have to be limited. As usual the ‘CAFE’ will be open every afternoon for hot & cold drinks, sweets & crisps etc.

Futher details of the program, opening and event times will be published in the August Reeves Tale. If there are any particular activities that you would like us to organise please contact our secretary.

The Group is looking for additional volunteers to help with the events during 2008/9.   Please contact our secretary on 01362 688749.

Bawdeswell Activities Group is a result of Project Bawdeswell and gratefully acknowledge grant aid from Norfolk Community Foundation and Breckland Council and a donation from Bawdeswell Parish Council. We have also received some very generous donations of cash and equipment from villagers.

As reported last month, after the May Ball was over and we had all gone home, the marquee was vandalised - slashed along one full length with a sharp knife – well we had to pick up a bill for £250, the excess on the insurance, and this rather dented  our profits from the evening.

Windows in the village hall were also broken that night.

The Bawdeswell Book Club meets at the Old Workhouse Bar on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30pm.  New members always welcome.

This month we discussed ‘Innocent Traitor’ by Alison Weir.

The innocent traitor of the title is Lady Jane Grey.  Alison Weir is a popular British author and historian who also writes historical biographies which are readable and carefully researched.  This is a historical novel based on fact.   Most book club readers found it easily readable.

The story is told from the points of view of several people who all seemed to have the same personality. The psychological interpretation of the characters and the accounts written from a child’s point of view were particularly unconvincing.

We thought that the story is impossible to spoil so the book was worth reading but I personally prefer Ms Weir’s other more detailed and less speculative work. There are other more enjoyable historical blockbusters.

At the July meeting we will discuss

PROJECT BAWDESWELL

The meeting on 14th June was given a summary of the feedback from the presentation in March about options for the position and design of the village hall which has now been analysed.  The preferred site is option 2 between the bowling green and the basketball court.  Villagers opted for a traditional and unobtrusive building style which looks like it belongs in its setting, with a highly environmentally friendly content.  See our display board at the village fete for more information.  The next step is to develop external plans and an internal layout that will be presented to the village in the autumn.

An enormous amount of effort has been made to obtain funding for the erection of the children’s play equipment.  This has been very frustrating.  The realisation has been made that unfortunately, for insurance and health and safety reasons, we cannot do any of this work ourselves.  The equipment will have to be refurbished and installed by the original manufacturers in order to satisfy these requirements.  The cost of doing this and providing the correct safety surface and some other equipment suitable for an older age group is in excess of £20,000!!  Funding sources have been considered and an application was made to the most likely one at the beginning of May.  Unfortunately the time scales are long.  An answer to the first stage of the application will not be forthcoming until the end of July.  Based on the response there is a 2nd stage to go through and this will take even longer!  So sadly this equipment will not be in place for the school holidays.  Please remind children not to climb on it because it is unsafe at the moment.

The good news is that the cricket nets will be installed in the next couple of weeks.  Luckily volunteers from the village can do this work themselves and Project Bawdeswell is very grateful to the Activities Group team undertaking this job.

We need to increase the momentum of the project but, unfortunately, we are relying on a very small number of villagers who are already heavily involved in the Community.

If you want better facilities, now is the time for your support.

Some work is being done between meetings and behind the scenes by the sub groups but we need more people.

Join us on the 12th July at 10.00 am in the Village Hall. Come along and hear all about the various work streams and share your ideas with us.

the overspill from the water used was raised. Had the effect of storm water off the new structures been assessed with regard to the extra pressure on the drainage. Last year it had flooded gardens and poured down the street. The clerk will take this up with BC.

Village Matters: The phantom bottle dropper was around again. A large number of wine bottles were being left on the verge. Serco will come out to collect but it is also important for people to keep their eyes open to see who is dumping them. Please let any member of the council know if you have any idea of the culprit.

Breckland are offering space on their website to be used by villages to advertise any activities they wish.

Finance: The financial report was presented and signed. All outstanding subscriptions, grants and insurance were approved to be paid.

Date of the next meeting will be Tuesday 15 July at 7.30pm in the Village Hall.

Norfolk’s latest Young Farmers Club got off to a flying start as 14 potential members arrived for the launch at Bawdeswell village hall.  The guides at the first evening were Andy Jenness and county chairman Rob Proctor, who organised a number of team building activities.

The second evening was a mini rally hosted by Shauna McDougall, Michelle Ritchie and David Ottley.

Everyone enjoyed taking part in a mini competition – wiring a three pin plug, eating as many baked beans as possible with a cocktail stick plus dwile flunking.

At the third they joined Acle RFC on a farm walk at Henry and Holly Alston’s Billockby Hall Farm.

The club meets at Bawdeswell village hall from 7.30pm every Tuesday evening.

LINDAM SAFETY GATE RECALL

Argos has issued the following recall notice.

Product Recall: Lindam Safety Gates
Argos Catalogue numbers
375/3086 (Lindam model LD145) and
375/3282 (Lindam model LD146)

We have identified a problem with a batch of Lindam safety gates where the plastic hinge that retains the gate within the frame may fail in use. This will result in the gate becoming detached from the frame and the potential for injury.

We have decided therefore to recall the product(s).

Safety gates that are affected can be identified in the following ways: - the plastic used in the hinge mechanism is white not blue and the stairgate will be marked with a model number along the bottom bar of the gate.

Affected model numbers are LD145 and LD146. If you have one of these numbers your product is affected, any other model numbers are unaffected.

If you own one of the affected safety gates, please stop using it immediately and return it to your nearest Argos store for a full refund.

A Prologue from William Law – “The Perfection of all Virtues”

All prayer and devotion, fastings and repentance, mediation and retirement, all sacraments and ordinances are but so many means to render the soul…conformable to the will of God and to fill it with thankfulness and praise for everything that comes from God.  This is the perfection of all virtues, and all virtues that do not tend to it or proceed from it are but so many false ornaments of a soul not converted to God.

Bawdeswell P.C.C. - The New Church Organ project

The Organ Appeal was officially launched on Saturday 14 June at a concert given by Gerald Gifford, honorary curator of music at the Fitzwilliam Museum. He brought along some period keyboard instruments and played amongst other pieces some unpublished music by Handel, discovered in the archives of the Fitzwilliam Museum.

It was a most interesting and  unique event. Thank you all who supported it. There were visitors from as far afield as Lincolnshire and Cambridgeshire. We hope you all enjoyed it.  The baroque organ and harpsichord sounded very well in our church.

Many thanks to PCC members for their support as hosts.  The buffet and wine were much appreciated.

Last month we had a visit from the Diocesan Chancellor, Judge Paul Downes, and the Registrar Mr Ian Mayers, to confirm the finer details of the organ project and they   gave us enthusiastic  advice and support.

We are encouraging people to pledge modest donations over a period of time if it is easier for them to contribute in this way, as we are  borrowing the money to get on with the installation and regular payments will help us repay the loan.

The new organ is to be a memorial to anyone nominated by the donors and these names will be displayed in the organ gallery.

Details of the project are inside the church which is open daily.

See also the manufacturer’s website at www.makinorgans.co.uk  where you can listen to samples of music from these advanced instruments.

 RECTOR’S  LETTER

The Rector has been on Sabbatical Leave and we thank the Archdeacon of Lynn for writing to us in his place.

Dear All

This is a wonderful time of the year.  As I write the weather is less than spring-like but plant and tree life is vibrant and, to use words from a favourite song of mine, “God is playing hide and seek everywhere you turn.”  (if we have eyes to see!)  Taking good care of God’s creation is a fundamental responsibility for all of us.  As the first two chapters of Genesis suggests, we are stewards of God’s creation, entrusted with a most precious gift.  As stewards we have been given everything and have a duty to use those gifts responsibly and not to abuse them.  We are in partnership with God in looking after our environment and have a responsibility to do all that we can to be good stewards even though it may seem that what we can do as individuals has minimum impact on the global situation.

As Christians, it seems to me that we are bound to warm and respond to such a calling, for stewardship is at the heart of the Christian Gospel.  At many Communion services we say, as the bread and wine, our gifts of money and ourselves are offered to God at the offertory, “Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendour and the majesty; for everything in heaven and on earth is yours.  All things come from you, and of your own do we give you.”  We worship a God of infinite generosity and love who has spent himself, sacrificed himself in giving us all the things that we require to live and grow and mature and be at peace with him in his creation.

When we begin to understand something of that generosity and love we can do nothing but respond in thankfulness, living every moment of our lives for him, recognising that in everything we are in partnership with him, instruments of his peace and his love in his world.  This of course means that we become even more aware of our shortcomings and therefore our dependence on him for guidance, strength and his forgiveness as we seek to be good stewards of all that he has given us.

The Christian steward seeks no reward for his good stewardship, but the freedom, the peace, the purpose, the hope, the love, that comes from a life centred on God brings the joy and fullness of life that Jesus promised.

With my prayers and very best wishes for a happy and blessed Summer.

Yours ever,

Martin Gray

Archdeacon of Lynn
