BAWDESWELL ACTIVITIES GROUP (BAG) – Events at the Village Hall
News - As we write this, Half Term activities at the hall are in progress. A slow start on the Monday was followed by a busy Tuesday as the bright sun and 15oC temperature raised the attendance for indoor and outdoor games including Pool, Table tennis, Air Hockey, Rounders and Football. The Monoprinting run by Breckland Council on Wednesday attracted 14 children who designed and printed some excellent cards. Plans are being made to erect the new cricket nets in April including the provision of spring loaded stumps and surface matting. We gratefully acknowledge a recent personal donation of £100 by a local resident.
Easter Holidays –26th March to 4th April – A program of activities has been arranged. Please see separate page for details.
Afternoon Bingo – Due to poor attendance these sessions have been suspended.
Games Afternoon – On Monday 17 March starting at 1.30 pm. Come and play any of the following: Whist, Rummy, Bridge, Hearts, Sorry, Scrabble and other board games or, for exercise, Table Tennis!! If you need a lift to the Village Hall for this, call Janet on 688749.
The Group is looking for additional volunteers to help with the events during 2008. Please contact Janet on 688749.

New School Canopy
On the last day of term we had Canopies UK in school who erected a canopy outside of the Rhino Classroom. This will enable the children to work and play outside all year round.
Visits/Visitors
The Romans came into school on 15th January to work with Rhino Class. A great day was had by all the class and a great deal of history was learned. The children all looked great in their costumes.
Last Friday Year R, 1 2 & 3 went to see the Panto at the Theatre Royal. They had a lovely time and well done to all the children for behaving well. This Friday it is the turn of Year 4, 5 & 6 when they go to the Theatre Royal to see Hamlet.
We are lucky to have a “Young Enterprise” team in on 5th February 08, to work with Y5 and Y6 children to give them an opportunity to learn about the wider world and industry.
Theatre Trips
The children enjoyed their trips to the Theatre in January. Years R,1,2 & 3 thoroughly enjoyed the Pantomime and behaved well during the visit. Years 4,5 & 6 saw Hamlet which they all enjoyed and are still talking about now! They have produced some really good work from the visit.
Parents & Toddlers / Baby Group
We meet at Bawdeswell Village Hall from 9.30am to Midday each Friday
Come along for a chat and a coffee & let your child have some fun with playdough, colouring and puzzles plus lots of toys and there are additional activities most weeks.

BAWDESWELL BADGERS PRE-SCHOOL
Hello everyone. I hope by the time you read this, spring will be almost with us, which is our theme in pre-school for the next half term.
Pre-school is always a busy, happy place and the next few weeks will be no exception, our activities – planting our own seeds and tending our garden, learning how to look after our new pet (top secret not arrived yet) not to mention cooking in our new cooker, painting, sticking and just having fun, will keep us very well occupied.
Mums, we have a few vacancies available and if you would like to come along and join us for a session you are most welcome, intake from half term after the child becomes 2 ½ years, please phone and make an appointment.
As always a huge thank you to our exhausted committee and those of you who kindly support us.
Carol Taylor – Supervisor 01362 688875

We met on Monday 12th February anticipating an interesting and enjoyable evening and we were certainly not disappointed. We all listened avidly to Gill Page's description of how 14,331 shoeboxes from the NR postal district of Norfolk were filled with gifts, collected, sorted, packed and sent off in lorries to Serbia.
Gill travelled to Serbia on 7th December and she and the few other helpers were able to assist with the distribution of the boxes to children in hospitals, schools and orphanages. Gypsy children also, who appeared to be living under bridges, were not forgotten. From the many slides Gill showed us of children holding on to their boxes or hugging their cuddly toys, it was apparent that they were absolutely thrilled with these gifts. Thank you Gill for sharing your wonderful experience with us.
We then had our tea/coffee break and discussed future events. The raffle was won by Audrey.
Our next meeting is on Monday 10th March - Old School Room at 7.30 p.m. when the speaker will be Karen Weston from Sparham. The subject will be magnotherapy for people and animals. The exhibit will be a Flower Arrangement in an Eggcup, and we are reminded we could bring unwanted or broken jewellery to the meeting for Heart Research UK.
Mary Humphrey
The Book Club meets in the Old Workhouse Bar on the first Thursday of every month at 7.30 pm and welcomes new members. We mostly obtain books from the Library so there is not the expense of buying new books each month.
Our book choice for the March meeting is "A Gathering Light ' by Jennifer Donnelly.

FOXLEY PARISH COUNCIL
Extracts from the Minutes of meeting held on Thursday 14 February 2008 7.30 pm in the village Hall
Present: , Mr J Harvey, Mr N Mears, Mr D Barrett, Mr N Hatch, Mr G Bambridge DC, the clerk and 3 members of the public.
Apologies: The Chairman apologised for the change of date but it was due to unforseen circumstances which meant any possible absences by Councillors would leave the Council without a quorum, since the resignation of Mrs Nightingale. Apologies were received from PCSO.
Previous minutes were read, approved and signed.
Matters arising: Emergency Plan - Homewatch Co ordinator hopes that his team will help in similar capacities as they do now. He would be asked if he were prepared to be the named Emergency Co ordinator.
Councillor Hatch gave an excellent report on the Police Authority Meeting he attended in January. It was again stressed that EVERY CRIME, HOWEVER MINOR, SHOULD BE REPORTED TO THE POLICE. Most statistics are based on reported crime - so if it's not recorded, no one adds it into the greater picture.
Mr Bambridge would chase Environmental Health about the report on Mr Davis’ pit.
The Standards Officer has confirmed that Councillors did not need a dispensation to discuss matters about the Village Hall, of which they are trustees. Only in the case of a Councillor being elected to the Village Hall Committee in his/her right, would they have to declare a personal and prejudicial interest.
Correspondence: Mrs Nightingale has resigned from the Parish Council and a co opted councillor would be looked for before the Annual Meetings. The Clerk would send a letter of thanks for her service.
Mr Bambridge re iterated his position about representing the Parish Council and parishioners. The Parish Council were in accordance with this.
Local Development Plan had arrived but there are no site specific maps. How can judgements be made if there are no maps to show where the sites for proposed building work might be. Councillors will take home report and read carefully. A letter reiterating the Council’s position will be sent. Response is due by 28th March.
Drainage Matters: Anglian Water had visited the village and made a proposal to build a new pumping station on the car park of the Village Hall. Many questions had arisen, not least the query whether AW could compulsorarily purchase the land if the VH Committee disagreed. A number of questions would be put to AW including a need for a timeline of operations. They had said it would be done between April & October 2009. The new sewer would be for residents of West Foxley but it would have to cross the main road to the pumping station before going on to join up with the main sewer near Bawdeswell. The car park was the best choice. A public Meeting would be held by AW nearer the time.
Planning Applications: None A brief discussion took place on the Cherry Tree Cottage saga which appears to flout logic and the Parish Council's objections.
Village Matters: Cars for sale had recently been illegally parked on the verge of the A1067 near a junction. Fortunately the vendors had listened to the Chairman and removed them. It is actually illegal to block the view of road users and Highways are able to remove them. Should the cars not be displaying Road Tax, the Police will remove them. Mr Bambridge will send a copy of the rules relating to this.
The Village Hall is proceeding with its refurbishment.
Finance-The financial report was presented and signed.
Dates of next meeting: Annual Parish Meeting, Annual Parish Council Meeting and 1st Parish Council Meeting of new year will be held on TUESDAY 20th MAY, 7.30 pm in the Village Hall.
BAWDESWELL PARISH COUNCIL - EXTRACTS OF MEETING HELD ON MONDAY 11 FEBRUARY 2008
PRESENT : Councillors Mallen, Shannon, Lilwall, Beane & Mason
Mr. G. Bambridge (DC) 2 parishioners
APOLOGIES: Councillor Hipperson. Clerk
MINUTES OF LAST MEETING: Agreed and signed
- PC unanimously agreed to keep to their decision to re-instate Councillor Cockburn. (All Councillors reminded about their conduct and responsibilities. Any difficulties to be reported to Clerk/Chairman.)
- NCC to contact Fairstead Homes about speed reactive sign/30mph roundel promised end Nov 07.
- 9 Folland Court single storey rear extension – No Objections
- Enforcement Notice reported for Wood Farm
- PP granted to Lodge Plantation- wooden shed
- Anglian Water – matter still ongoing. Letter sent to Consumer Council for Water regarding our queries about responsibility for sewage system in upper part Hall Road – reply received stating that Section 18 agreement not completed. NCC/Breckland to be contacted.
LOCAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN: Plan concentrated on expansion of Breckland towns, particularly Thetford but to a lesser extent Dereham. Our nearest Local Service Centre is Swanton Morley, which could be expanded by 50+ houses. PC to write to Planners saying LDF offered little to rural communities and they felt there is serious lack of proposals or concerns for rural communities. Bawdeswell would like to retain a settlement boundary with space for some development. PC would also like to know why Breckland are keeping secret the names of proposers of the expansion of the settlement boundary and would like these names under the Freedom of Information Act.
- Highways to be contacted about replacing posts along edge of Reepham Road.
DATE OF NEXT MEETING: MONDAY 3rd MARCH AT 7.45PM IN THE VILLAGE HALL.

PROJECT BAWDESWELL
At the meeting on 10 February the group met with the architect and reviewed the outline scheme produced by the Hall & Access sub-group to redevelop the recreation ground and expand the hall facilities. A Wine and Cheese evening is to be held on Tuesday 11 March to roll out this exciting new concept to the residents of Bawdeswell. Invitations have been sent to every house in the village and other interested parties.
There was considerable discussion on the way forward with the new (recycled) equipment for the children’s play area. Some health & safety issues have been raised and a meeting will be held with the original manufacturer to discuss the way forward. RoSPA have been contacted and are quite positive about us re-installing this equipment.
The Activities sub-group reported on their progress and plans for 2008.
A lot of work is being done between meetings and behind the scenes. The next meetings of the main group are scheduled for Saturdays 8 March and 12 April at 10.00 am in the Village Hall. Come along and hear all about the various work streams and share your ideas with us. All are welcome. See our website www.projectbawdeswell.org.uk for more information.
CAN YOU HELP – we need more volunteers to help with the organisation of Project Bawdeswell especially fundraising.
If you are interested in helping please call the Secretary on 688749.

Monies will be raised in memory of the two former Reepham High School students who died of cancer and funds split between caring for children with cancer and the Samantha Dickson Brain Tumour Trust. Club members will be helping the students set up camp, cooking and supplying breakfast. Robert will be joining the students on the walk. The club has sponsored the event to the sum of £600 and all students are looking for further generous sponsorship.
Rotarian Paul Smith is busy with helping the organization of the technology evening at the Hewitt School Norwich on 6th March. A team from Reepham High School has entered the event and Paul has persuaded Wing Commander Wallis of the ‘James Bond Autogiro Fame’ to help judge the contest.
Members of the club are helping the Reepham Environmental Group to apply for grants to help with properties within Reepham to improve their insulation. Monies are available from EADA and Broadland Council to help the community with energy savings.
A quiz night arranged by Rotarian Richard Cooke raised over £400, which is being donated to the sponsored walk and a further £132 was raised by Rotarian Kevin Marles with his BBQ at a recent fundraising event.

LOVE IN A BOX. Shoeboxes to Serbia.
During 2007, people in the NR postal area filled 14,331 shoeboxes with presents for children in Novi Sad, Serbia. I was very privileged to go with a group from Samaritan’s Purse International to distribute some of the shoeboxes.
We went to a Romany community living under a road bridge on a massive rubbish dump. Their homes were made from wood, cardboard and bits of metal. The weather was bleak and wet and underfoot was thick, deep mud. They children appeared from everywhere, knowing what we were bringing and clamoured around our minibus with bright, eager faces shouting “packets, packets!” They rushed off to their homes to open their boxes.
The men took the empty cardboard cartons to insulate their houses.
We visited an Institution for “Youths with Developmental Difficulties”. One young man in his 20’s had spent 3 months in the Autumn making a beautiful, woven wall-hanging of a tractor. He loved machines including tractors and lorries. What did he get in his box? A large truck and trailer. He was thrilled!
I don’t know how many boxes we gave out in those few day - hundreds! I saw the lorry from Norfolk arrive in Novi Sad with all the boxes intact.
About 50 boxes were sent from the benefice. Thankyou to the Sparham Family Service, The Beck W.I., the W.F.H. and everyone who filled boxes, collected fillers, knitted and helped in the warehouse.
More wool is needed for knitting hats, gloves and scarves so if you have any I would be very grateful.
I hope we will be able to send many more boxes this year so if you would like to help in any way please let me know. (01362 688379)

Electronic Hymnal
We have had the loan of an Electronic Hymnal to evaluate its use for the occasions when one of our churches cannot get an organist. It is a very versatile piece of electronics and can reproduce the sound of church organs large and small, also many other musical instruments, a complete brass band and orchestras of different sizes.
It has been heard in all our churches now and the churchwardens need to make the decision whether we purchase it as a group. If you have any comments about it, please let them be known.
It would be an asset to own one, but if it is considered too costly then we will have to send it back or seek a generous donor to buy it for us.
Men’s Breakfast
The first one of the year was held in Foxley Village Hall on Saturday 16th February. Many thanks to Monica Hatch and her team for a very good breakfast, enjoyed this time by 33 lucky men.

One Step Ahead
We have been encouraged by the increased attendance at Bawdeswell church and we always welcome newcomers and occasional attenders. There is always coffee and a chance to socialise afterwards if you have time. Please do come along sometime.
The monthly Benefice service which rotates around the six villages is proving a very good way to extend our circle of acquaintances and you find when you drive through the neighbouring villages you begin to recognise people. The Men’s Breakfasts and Ladies Lunches are taking this a step further and we find we have greatly enlarged our circle of friends in the surrounding area.
The monthly Benefice service is called “One Step Ahead” - a new form of service on the second Sunday of every month – specially devised for those who find our traditional services a bit heavy going. They are short and to the point and the aim is to learn something and go home with a thought for the day, not be preached at! See the church notice boards or the back of this magazine for the location of the next one.
Bawdeswell P.C.C. - The New Church Organ project
The fund stands at just over £4,000. Thank you those who have started the ball rolling.
If you are thinking about making a donation in memory of somebody or as a memorial to yourself, there is some advantage to the recoverable tax if you make the donation before 5th April when the chancellor will be reducing this concession. A donation of £390 is currently worth £500 with the tax relief. After 5th April it would cost you £400 to make the same donation.
It is an interesting thought that it would only take for example 2 gifts of £3,000, three gifts of £2,000, 4 gifts of £1,000 and 5 of £500 and we would be there!
All donations, however small, will help and will of course be gratefully received. These can be made over a period of months or years, or as a one-off gift.
Details of the proposed organ are on a display inside the church which is open daily.
See also the manufacturer’s website at www.makinorgans.co.uk where you can listen to samples of music from these advanced instruments.
There is to be a gala concert in the church on 14th June starring Gerald Gifford and a sample of his keyboards. This is in support of or appeal.
Robin Taylor.
From the Rector
Dear Everybody, hello again,
I think much of the reaction to the Archbishop of Canterbury talking about Sharia law in Britain is “shoot the messenger”. A lot of people are uncomfortable thinking that there may be external influences in the law that governs them. The idea that Muslim law might become part of the law of the land worries many. And bragging by Islamists that Britain will have complete Sharia law by 2050 doesn’t help.
But there have always been “external” influences on our laws, and our laws advantage some and disadvantage others. European law affects ours; different invaders, or changes of sovereign, over the centuries brought new laws; new laws arise following new ideas. They changed the society in which we live, as much as the ideas of immigrant communities. Laws change all the time. Who is it who makes them change? How would you yourself get a law changed?
If you like to use Lent to think, it’s good to ask yourself how much you need to dominate others. Even in the small things of life, like domestic arrangements, or conversations, do they have to play by your rules? Do you live your life as if you have a little kingdom that you organise? It might be something that you decide you need to relax.
At Easter, Christians will be celebrating the fact that they are immigrants into a new kingdom. They believe that what Jesus did has changed the border controls of heaven. Then they’ll ask themselves, how much did heaven have to change to let me in, how much do I have to change to be at home here? That’s why it’s always a tragedy if churches aren’t open to all comers.
But for all of us, the debate about who changes the rules that we live by is important. What we hope and pray is that those rules will only get better.
God bless you this Easter. David Head
