BAWDESWELL BADGERS PRE-SCHOOL

Hello everyone, well we’re back ready for a new exciting term, we welcome Shannon, Abby, Finley, Lucy and Alfie, and we can’t wait to get to know them.

This term we are exploring our natural world and our garden is now ready for our bean plants and sunflowers.  Our fish Goldie and Bubbles are very happy and our menagerie grows as we now have some stick insects the children are very keen to learn all about them.

A few high spots this term will be a visit from SAC Laura Taylor R.A.F who is coming in prior to her deployment to the Falkland Islands, Laura is taking a very special visitor with her from pre-school, and will send back regular photo’s and updates on her new surroundings and life, we wish her a safe and exciting time.  Weather permitting we plan a walk around Bawdeswell armed with cameras (we are hoping for a budding David Bailey)

Finally our committee are working very hard on our behalf, at the moment trying to access funding for much needed resources/ outside play area, thank you and good luck.

We have already started our waiting list for September intake, if you wish to come in and visit or have a chat please feel free to give me a ring at the number below.

BAWDESWELL COMMUNITY PRIMARY SCHOOL

Our school is taking part in Sainsbury’s Active Kids Campaign again. As you know, this is a great way for us to gain invaluable equipment and experiences for our children – at no extra cost to the school.  Last year, you helped us to collect an amazing 5078 vouchers, enabling our children to claim their share of the £52 million of equipment.

The campaign runs from 14th February to 4th June and we would be grateful if you would collect your Active Kids vouchers whenever you or your friends and family shop at Sainsbury’s.

The Wildlife Club would like to ask for your help.  They are in need of somebody to make them a stand out of wood to display notices outside.  If anybody is willing to help please could you speak to Mr Kerkham.  Thank You.

Cleanright - Mr Peter Marcou from Cleanright has kindly been in to clean the carpets around the school free of charge.  We would like to say how professional he was and would recommend him to anyone who is thinking of having their carpets cleaned in their home or business. His telephone number is 01362 688048 or, mobile 07880541225.

Sport -  A mixed boys and girls year 5 & 6 team went to Carrow Park to compete in a ‘Football In The Community Competition’.  A great day was had by all with lots of goals and action.  Well done to all our players!

REEPHAM HIGH SCHOOL REUNION

Were you at Reepham Secondary Modern School in 1960?

On Saturday 14th June there will be a reunion for all the pupils who made up that first intake in 1960. It will take place at Reepham High School and will run from 4.30 pm to 9.00 pm. There will be tours of the school and plenty of chance to meet former school pals. Light refreshments will be available.

If you would like to come to the reunion please contact either Paul Soanes on 01603 871251 ( email psoanes@btinternet.com,) or Liz (Jones) Nickerson on 01362 850772 ( email elinic@f2s.com ) so we know how many to expect. There will be a small charge to cover the cost of refreshments.
If you have any old photo’s please would you bring them along? If you could scan them and email a copy, we would then be able to have a display ready for the event.

BAWDESWELL BOOK CLUB

The Book Club meets in the Old Workhouse Bar on the first Thursday of every month at 7.30 pm and welcomes new members.  We mostly obtain books from the Library so there is not the expense of buying new books each month.

Our book choice for April is " A Thousand Splendid Suns " by Khaled  Hosseini.

Last month we read " Suite  Française " by Irène Némirovsky.

Irène Némirovsky was already an established author when  she decided to write a series of 5 books  based on the situation in  France at the time of the German occupation of 1942.  A Jew, who had  escaped persecution in her native Russia, she was sadly deported and  died in Auschwitz before she could complete her work.

The first two beautifully written books, 'Storm in  June' and 'Dolce', which form "Suite Française", graphically depict  the mass exodus from Paris in advance of the German occupation and  the trials and sufferings of the rural inhabitants of the occupied  zone in coping first with their fleeing countrymen, then the German  soldiers living amongst them, as well as personal issues.

The book was first published in France in 2004 having  been painstakingly transcribed from minutely written notes by the  author’s daughter.  It was very well received by the Book Club members.

BAWDESWELL FOOTBALL CLUB

New players and supporters are needed for the team. For information about the club please contact Philip Duffield on (01362) 688611

More club  information is available online at http://bawdeswellfc.co.uk/default.aspx

The May Ball on 17th May 2008 is our next event.  Nearly 200 tickets have been sold.  We need to know the first week in May if anybody else wants tickets.

BRECKLAND BALL  Saturday 17th May

Big Band & Disco

To the residents around the Recreation Ground, we apologise in advance for any disturbance that might be caused by the live music on the night of Saturday 17th  May. from 6.30 p.m. through to midnight.

While we will attempt to keep any inconvenience to an absolute minimum, such an event will inevitably cause a limited amount of noise pollution and nuisance to our neighbours, for which we very much regret.  We would therefore like to apologise in advance.

PROJECT BAWDESWELL

Due to personal commitments several members of the committee were unavailable on 12th April so that meeting had to be cancelled.

Following the presentation on 11th March re an expanded village hall we have been looking at the feedback and the only options with any significant support are 2 & 3. Option 2 is to build in between the Bowls Club & Basketball Court and Option 3 is to build on the existing car park. Option 5 had some serious objections and there was little support for options 1, 4A & 4B so these four will all be dropped. The sub-group dealing with this will now look more closely at the preferred options 2 & 3 only, as well as all the feedback on design and environmental issues and report back at the next meeting.

A lot of work is being done between meetings and behind the scenes.  The next meetings of the main group are scheduled for Saturdays 10 May and 14 June at 10.00 am in the Village Hall. Come along and hear all about the various work streams and share your ideas with us.

All are welcome. See our website www.projectbawdeswell.org.uk for more information.

CAN YOU HELP – we need volunteers to help with the organisation of Project Bawdeswell. If you are interested in helping please call the Secretary on 688749.

BAWDESWELL PARISH COUNCIL-EXTRACTS OF MEETING HELD ON MONDAY 7th APRIL 2008

PRESENT :    Councillors Mallen, Shannon, Lilwall, Beane , Cockburn and Mason

Mr. G. Bambridge (DC)     8 parishioners

APOLOGIES:   Councillor Hipperson.  Mrs. I. Floering Blackman

MINUTES OF LAST MEETING:   Agreed and signed

-Andrea Long and Sam Hubbard from Breckland attended the meeting to update PC on the Local Development Plan.   Bawdeswell will not become a Local Service Centre but will be maintained as a village, only allowing for small scale and occasional developments including affordable housing for local people.   Views are needed on the settlement boundary – should areas be taken out or included – are there important open spaces/areas which should be protected?  Andrea and Sam to be invited to the 7th July PC meeting to discuss settlement boundary.

- Folland Court-  work has started on site- trees have been cut down.  NCC to be asked if there could be some kind of traffic control around the bad bend whilst work is being carried out and heavy lorries are in the area.   Flagship Housing has ‘gifted’ the piece of land fronting onto The Street to the PC.

- Midsummer Cottage, 3 Reepham Road – single storey extension and conservatory.  No Objections.

- Kates Cottage, The Street – two storey extension to rear – No objections to this extension but clarification needed on garage which is included on drawing but not in details or plans.

- 30 Norwich Road – conversion to hairdressers – change of use requiring PP not needed.  Situation to be re-assessed if level of business increases.

- Anglian Water – Section 18 Agreement for Phase 2 of Hall Road estate cannot be found by either NCC or Breckland so PC unable to progress matter further.

PO – Letter to be sent to PO asking for an update on situation as Bawdeswell PO listed as ‘temporarily closed’.

NEXT MEETING;     MONDAY 12th MAY 7 PM in the village hall.

THERE WILL BE THREE MEETINGS – THE ANNUAL PARISH MEETING (this is an open meeting for Parishioners to discuss problems/concerns in the Village) – THE ANNUAL PARISH COUNCIL MEETING (this is when the PC elect a new Chairman and Vice Chairman) – and the MAY PARISH COUNCIL MEETING.    ALL PARISHIONERS ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND.

Digital Television (from Norfolk County Council Website)

Consumers in Norfolk are being warned of rogue sellers of digital TV services, who are believed to be deliberately misleading residents regarding the forthcoming digital switchover. Norfolk County Council Trading Standards Officers spoke to a consumer in Hellesdon in Norwich - who was told by a door-to-door satellite television salesman last week that he would no longer be able to obtain digital TV through his aerial after digital switchover. The salesman claimed the resident needed to sign up to a respective satellite company - such as the one he was promoting. However, the consumer had a freeview receiver and a suitable aerial already, so he knew that the salesman was wrong. Norfolk County Council Trading Standards Officers are issuing a warning, as other residents may be mislead.

Switchover in the Anglia region is not due to take place until 2011, so consumers should not feel any need to be rushed into a decision about which option they will choose in order to receive digital television. After switchover, a range of digital TV options will continue to be available through an aerial (via either a digital box or digital TV), a satellite dish, cable, or broadband.

Consumers who have been told something different, or who think that they may have been misled into signing a contract for digital TV services, can report the matter to Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06.

Detailed independent advice and information about Digital Switchover is available at www.digitaluk.co.uk/ , or on 0845 6 50 50 50.

BECK WI

Alethia welcomed us all to our April meeting and introduced our speaker, Carolyn Williams, whose subject was the Origins of Nursery Rhymes.

Carolyn then gave us all a sheet filled with some of the most well-known and popular Nursery Rhymes.  She told us she had long been interested in Nursery Rhymes and as she also had a keen interest and love of history, she had spent years of research into their origins.  Lots of rhymes could be classed as educational or entertaining for children but ones handed down by adults usually held dark and hidden meanings.  Really, a most interesting and informative talk.

After our tea/coffee break Alethia told us of forthcoming events.  Carolyn judged the exhibits ‘Childhood Souvenirs’ – the winner was Gill, second Audrey.

We were reminded that that will not be a meeting in The Old School Room in May.  Instead, we have been invited to join a meeting with Elsing and Mileham W.I’s at Elsing Village Hall.  This is on Tuesday 20th May at 7.30pm.

REEPHAM & DISTRICT  ROTARY

The club recently held a meeting at Bawdeswell Garden Centre and were entertained by David Joice giving a fantastic rendition of his Parker stories in the traditional Norfolk dialect which only David can do.  A DVD has been made of the evening.

Rotarians Robert Briggs, Gareth Homphray-Davies and Ian Malton all took part in the Peddars Way Walk with six pupils from Reepham High School raising funds for two cancer charities.  The pupils raised over £2,000.  Support was given by other Members setting up camps along the route and feeding nine very hungry people!  Despite heavy rain on the Friday everybody had a good time and it was a very good experience for the six pupils.  They all covered 48 miles in a total of just over 20 hours – quite a few blisters to show for their efforts!

Several Members of the club recently attended the funeral of one of its founder Members, John Grant, who died recently.  John did sterling work for the club in its early days being treasurer and sorting out the charitable status.

BENEFICE NEWS AND EVENTS

"This Pentecost, May 11, we will be having a One More Step service with a difference.  All through the Norwich Diocese, churches, benefices and deaneries will be having services to offer their "Growth plans", which they have been talking about in PCCs and deaneries.  And we as a benefice will be joining together at Sparham Church to present during the service (at 10.30am) our plans.

Some of us have been involved in these discussions, and some of us haven't.  So the plans will be read out, and you will have a chance to agree with what has been said and suggested, or to commit yourself to growth in some slightly different way.

The three areas of growth that the Diocese has asked us to focus on are: growth in numbers, growth in discipleship, and growth in service.  In other words, more, holy, caring people.  Let's see if it makes a difference!"

The 10.30 service at Bylaugh on the fourth Sunday of the month will move to 9am in the summer months, so that there can be hymns with Morning Prayer.  In the winter months, Bylaugh church will have the fourth Sunday Morning Prayer at 10.30am as currently, but without music.  "Summer" and "winter" are defined by daylight saving.

Events for this month are:

14th Coffee morning Lyng – 12 Soanes Court

17th Friends of Bawdeswell church Grand Ball village hall.  Tickets available from James Lilwall 01362 688499

Just a reminder that The Benefice Diary appears on the Internet at www.bawdeswell.net/beneficediary   and this is updated whenever  new  information is forthcoming.

ST.THOMAS’ CHURCH, FOXLEY

Many people in the village were greatly saddened to hear of the death of Derek Moore, a keen fisherman and dog–lover. His funeral at St. Thomas’ Church on Monday 31st. March was extremely well attended and the Rev. David Head presented a most appropriate eulogy based on the fact that Jesus and the Apostles were also fishermen. We express our sympathy to Heather, Paul and Jamie and his family and friends. There were collections both for the hospital and the church and after Derek’s interment in the churchyard everyone was invited to the Village Hall for refreshments.

Our architect Mr. Nick Warns carried out our five-yearly inspection, known as the “Quinquennial”, on February 11th. Happily he found things in better order than last time, but there is much still to do. In particular, further attempts must be made to improve drainage (will we ever succeed?) and to repair defects in the chancel roof. Unfortunately the latter must precede re-decoration of the chancel interior, for obvious reasons, and the refurbishment of the porch, which we so much want to do.  So, more events, functions, concerts needed! Any ideas? .

The Easter Day congregation at St. Thomas’ contributed £56-00 to the Diocesan Lent Appeal for the Anglican Church in Papua New Guinea.

We are intending to organise a Harvest Supper in the Village Hall in the Autumn and also the Head Gardener at Salle Park is coming to give us a talk about the newly re-generated gardens there and their production of organic fruit and vegetables.

Our Annual Parochial Church Meeting will be held in the church on Monday

28th. April at 7-30 pm. All parishioners welcome.

Diana Harvey. P.C.C. Secretary.

ALL SAINTS CHURCH, BAWDESWELL

Funerals

140 people turned out for Annie Turner’s funeral on 1st April. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.  A great character and inspiration to many.

The funeral of Ken Jarvis is due to take place on  24th April.

Bawdeswell P.C.C. - The New Church Organ project

The fund stands at £11,000.  That’s £3,000 up on last month, which is very, very good.  Although the Tax rules were changed at the last Budget, the Chancellor has delayed the implementation for charities and allowed interim arrangements so that the original level of tax can still be recovered if people Gift Aid their donations.  It is not clear how long this concession will last. We are now encouraging people to pledge modest donations over a period of time if it is easier for them to become involved in that way as we are considering borrowing the money to get on with the project, and regular payments would help us repay the loan.  The organ will become a memorial to anyone nominated by the donors and these names will be recorded and displayed in the organ gallery.

Details of the project are on a display  inside the church which is open daily.

See also the manufacturer’s website at www.makinorgans.co.uk  where you can listen to samples of music from these advanced instruments.

There is to be a gala concert in the church on 14th June starring Gerald Gifford, curator of music at the Fitzwilliam Museum. He will bring along some period keyboard instruments. This is in support of our appeal.

Annual Parochial Church Meeting and Vestry Meeting were held in Bawdeswell Church at 7pm on  Tuesday 8th April 2008.

William Mason and Robin Taylor were re-elected as Churchwardens for another year.

The following other appointments were made:-

Lay Chairman – Ken Ewing

Treasurer – William Mason

Electoral Roll Officer – Marietta Menzies

Secretary – Sandi Taylor.

PCC Committee members – Irene Ames, Jane Ewing, Sue Lilwall, James Lilwall, Janet Cockburn, Karin Mason.

Robin Taylor.

From the Rector

Dear Everybody, hello again,

Resources have suddenly become a huge issue for us all.  Is there going to be enough food in the world?  Who can afford to eat, who can afford to move house, what will happen on the high street?  We stand at the edge of a period which seems more uncertain than for a long time.

And all of it seemed to be going so well, as if the good times would never end.  Imported goods were driving down the cost of living.  We were being given discounts by various governments to buy shares in utilities, or council houses.  PFI deals meant that large projects were being undertaken.  House prices, which make us feel wealthy except when we have to move, were always going up.  There seemed to be no end to growth.  It changed so quickly.

Growth is always good, isn’t it?  Or is it?  We do need to grow morally and spiritually, and those things don’t have an end.  But money?  And possessions?  The search for economic growth meant that we needed resources to enable it, and most of the resources available to us were our future, and we now have to digest them slowly as there aren’t enough left to carry on at this rate.  The planet won’t be able to grow food for more people as well as bio-fuels for us to be busier.

There are services this month through the diocese called “Committed to Growth”.  This is not just about numbers, but also about spiritual growth and trying to be better Christians.

And if you had to commit yourself to grow in the months ahead, when the economy may shrink, and you may not be able to afford all that you currently do, in what way do you think you can buck the trend?  How are you going to look back on this summer as a time that you grew personally?  What inner resources do you have that grow by being used?

God bless you.          David Head
