A worrying incident in Bawdeswell
A man exposed himself to a young girl who was walking home past Adam’s Pit at the end of Paradise Lane recently. He was seen making a run for it by a dog walker moments later.
He had dark short cropped hair and was 30-ish.

BAWDESWELL BADGERS PRE – SCHOOL
Hello everyone, from the Bawdeswell Badgers Sett. There is much excitement in our school at the moment, the eagerly awaited poetry book has arrived and we have a copy in school, well done all.
Our Autumn Term is in full swing, we have already visited Chicken Cottage and examined and admired the new arrivals. The Ginger Bread Man (GBM) has arrived in America and we held a wild west day. We were lucky enough to have a visit from two beautiful horses, Titch and Topsy, and thanks go to Anna and Gilly for taking the time and trouble to bring them to see us. There is a rumour that GBM may show up in India soon for the Divali celebrations.
We have been fortunate to obtain some funding for an all weather surface. This is the first step to an outside area which we can access all year round. Thank you all committee and supporters alike.
Finally congratulations to our Treasurer, Megan, on the birth of beautiful baby Ryan, well done. Good luck to our hardworking and long suffering Chairperson, Sarah, who is having an operation in the near future, we wish you a speedy recovery and don’t worry about school work, we will keep it safe for you to sort out when you come home!!
Love from us all at Pre-School., Carol Taylor 01362 688875

‘BRIDGE FOR FUN’ – Improvers Seminar
A concentrated one day seminar will be held on Saturday 17th January 2009 at Sparham Old Schoolroom from 9am to 4 pm. This seminar is designed for those who have mastered the basics and want to improve their game. Attendees will be able to nominate particular topics to be covered from a list of options. The instructor is Mike Virgo, an English Bridge Union qualified teacher with over 40 years experience of playing bridge at all levels. Mike also runs courses for the Norfolk County Council Adult Education Service. The cost of the seminar is £20 which includes a buffet lunch and teas/coffees etc. Shared transport can be arranged if required. Spaces on this course are limited and applications will be processed on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. An application form is available from our website or contact the BAG events co-ordinator on 01362 688749.
TABLE TENNIS - Mondays 10th & 24th November and Monday 8th December
As our first table tennis evening on Monday 13th October was a success, we have booked Bawdeswell Village Hall for three more Mondays on the above dates from 7.30 - 9.30 p.m. While people have a break after a game, there are other games (less exhausting!!) or one can have a soft drink from the cafe and a chat. It doesn’t matter how well you play - come along and have some fun. There is a nominal charge of £1 per person towards the hire of the hall.
BINGO EVENINGS AT BAWDESWELL VILLAGE HALL
We tried running afternoon Bingo sessions but there wasn’t enough interest to continue. We are now considering running some Bingo sessions on a Wednesday evening, once or twice a month, but need to know the level of interest before committing to this. If you are interested call our events coordinator on 01362 688749.
Is there something else that you would like us to organise in the village? Let us know and we will see if there is enough interest to do it.
We now have a website where you can get the latest information about our activities
http://www.projectbawdeswell.org.uk/BAG/BAG.htm
BAG is looking for more volunteer helpers and committee members. For the committee they need ideas, especially from parents so it’s just an hour or two one evening every few weeks. For helpers at their events the volunteers only need to give the odd afternoon during school holiday times. All checks and training are paid for. We appreciate that a number of residents who would otherwise volunteer are being put off by the requirement for a CRB check but it is a requirement of all the bodies to whom we have applied or will apply to for funds.
Please contact our co-ordinator on 01362 688749 if you can spare an afternoon or two or you can download a volunteers’ form from their website.

FOXLEY PARISH COUNCIL – EXTRACT OF MINUTES FOR MEETING HELD ON 11 SEPTEMBER 2008 AT 7.30PM IN THE VILLAGE HALL
Present: Councillors Harvey, Mears, Hatch. Barrett, Mr G Bambridge(District Cllr), C Boer(Clerk) and 4 parishioners
Minutes of last Meeting: Agreed and signed
Matters Arising
Anglian Water and the Village Hall – Chairman confirmed that a meeting will be held in the near future between himself, a member of the Village Hall Cttee & our appointed valuer Mr Hayward, (with advice from our solicitor if needed) to discuss the way forward with regard to the sale of land to AW. Concerns were again voiced as to AW’s statutory powers to obtain the land if the PC had not agreed to sell; it was felt that this might be exaggerated and needs looking into. Chairman confirmed that no action will be taken before a village meeting has been convened. (Latest: AW have appointed a new engineer & fresh plans awaited ahead of any meetings.)
Emergency Plan – The recently amended EP was circulated and no further comments were raised. Therefore the Chairman and Clerk will liaise with Breckland to ensure all information is correct and to look into the best way forward regarding circulation & introduction of the EP.
Boundary Committee’s Proposal for One Unitary Authority in Norfolk – Clerk commissioned to formally respond to the Boundary Committee’s proposal. The PC made the following comments; the proposal would weaken representation from the District Councillor and County Councillor at PC meetings, the cost implications, concern that the interests of Norwich City would dominate the unitary authority and rural villages would not receive the attention they should.
LDF and Site Specifics Document – The Clerk was commissioned to formally respond to Breckland with the following comments to this document; Foxley does not meet the criteria for any further housing development, so therefore, the PC agrees with the decision that the 6 potential development sites are unreasonable, but wishes to retain the Settlement Boundary.
Correspondence
Red Telephone Boxes – BT are currently undertaking a national programme to agree the level of public payphone provisions which has led to some councils enquiring about the possibility of retaining the red kiosks, without the payphones for historical and aesthetic reasons. It was agreed that Foxley PC did not wish to adopt the red kiosk, reasons being the cost of upkeep of the kiosk and being prone to vandalism (two recent incidents).
Planning
The Old Forge – PA single storey pitched roof extension to form sun lounge PP granted with conditions
Moor Farm – application for agricultural storage building approved.
Church Farm Barns – Foxley Gallery – Enforcement Officer at Breckland investigating the exit following concerns raised that this is too close to the junction especially as there is more traffic that uses this road with recent housing developments.
Flora Nova – Further to the PC’s request to see the precise details of means of surface water disposal, Breckland say they have not yet received these details from the agent.
Village Matters
Overgrown grass banks on the paths of Old Fakenham Road and from Foxley to Bawdeswell, still not completed. Clerk commissioned to speak with Highways again and request that this work be completed as a matter of urgency and programmed periodically.
DATE OF NEXT MEETING TUESDAY 25 NOVEMBER 2008 AT 7.30PM IN THE VILLAGE HALL
BAWDESWELL PARISH COUNCIL – EXTRACT OF MINUTES - MEETING HELD ON 6 OCTOBER 2008 AT 7.45PM IN THE VILLAGE HALL
Present: Councillors Shannon, Mason, Beane, Cockburn, Lilwall, Mallen,
Mr G Bambridge, C Boer and 9 parishioners
Visit by the Local PCSO Angie Powles to Discuss any Police Matters Relating to the Village – Concerns voiced at the meeting included the continuing problem of cars parking on the pavements, and vehicles parked in an unsafe manner outside the school. The PCSO urged parishioners to call the Dereham Safer Neighbourhood Team to report any such incidents, these would be investigated and, if a build up of reports occurred for the same incident, the Police would respond accordingly.
Matters Arising not Covered Elsewhere on Agenda
Community Car Scheme – The additional finance necessary for the new CCS had been agreed by Breckland, and Bawdeswell would be the pilot for the new scheme. Breckland officials will be attending the next PC meeting in Nov to give a presentation on the new scheme. One coordinator had been found for the scheme, but the PC felt that a second was necessary along with sufficient drivers. Parishioners urged to support this worthwhile cause.
Transport Questionnaire – PC agreed that the questionnaire should be circulated to all parishioners in Bawdeswell and Foxley via the Reeves Tale. Parishioners were urged to complete questionnaires as it would help to establish the need for the new CCS and any possible future incorporation of Bawdeswell into a wider Flexi-Bus Dial-A-Ride system.
Vacancy for Parish Councillor – PC agreed unanimously to co-opt Alex Kirby as new Parish Councillor.
Highways Outstanding Work – Still awaiting date for the connection of the speed reactive sign from EDF. The ‘Village Only’ sign on the A1067 at the junction with Foxley Rd would be added to the list of future works once the sign has been manufactured. All other work now complete, however as a result of concerns that some of the various potholes reported had not actually been repaired, the Clerk was asked to investigate.
Old Surveyors Land – Clerk had received the draft Transfer from Hood Vores & Allwood. It was agreed that no covenants be placed on the sale of the land, in line with the advice of the solicitor. Trustees also gave authorisation to DS and JM to sign the Transfer at the appropriate time.
Community Speedwatch Scheme – Chairman confirmed that Norfolk Police had been inundated with requests for the CSS and therefore the PC would have to move fast if they were to move forward with this scheme. As a result of the recent advert in the Reeves Tale only 2 volunteers had been found. PC therefore reiterated its urgent request for suitable volunteers to come forward to assist with this worthwhile cause.
Planning
House next to McColls – PA 3PL/2008/1237/F proposed subdivision of dwelling house to 3 dwellings Objections - vehicle access and parking.
Wood Farm – PA 3PL/2008/0799/F subdivision of partially completed barn conversion to 2 self contained units with garaging. PP granted with conditions.
Folland Court – JM agreed to speak with Peddars Way officials about the recent concerns that had been expressed about the state of site.
Lodge Plantation, Dereham Rd – The Enforcement Officer had investigated the PC concerns over Breach of Conditions, and the gates are due to be replaced in the next couple of weeks.
Clerks Report
Post Office – Chairman confirmed that a suitable sub-master had been found and as a result the outreach postal services would open in the Church for 2 mornings a week for 3 hrs a day, from Jan 09 at the latest. It is important that this service needs to be well used if it is to be retained as a service to the village.
DATE OF NEXT MEETING MONDAY 3 NOVEMBER 2008 AT 7.45PM IN THE VILLAGE HALL – VISIT BY BRECKLAND OFFICIALS TO DISCUSS THE INTRODUCTION OF THE COMMUNITY CAR SCHEME.

Repairing such damage can be costly and local authorities may face claims for compensation for injuries received resulting from damaged or defective pavements. Drivers of vehicles that damage the footpath may face a claim from the
Village Working Parties
For those of you who can’t or don’t want to volunteer on a regular basis there are occasional working parties, sometimes on a weekday and sometimes at the weekend. One such party recently erected the cricket nets and another will be formed to put up the second bay. Some work is required in the children’s play area and there are plans to plant a screen of trees along the A1067. Dates for the rest of 2008 are

USE IT OR LOSE IT
Bawdeswell Book Club
Our last book choice was 'The
Trumpet Major" by Thomas Hardy.
Unlike
many of his other works ( e.g. Tess ) this was a more light hearted and
even comic love story set in the time of the Napoleonic wars. It
gave an interesting insight into the Army and Navy of the time and
local preparations for an expected invasion.
The main story revolves around
the interplay between Anne, a rather charmless heroine, and her 3
suitors. Festus, a dissolute and cowardly character, hoping to
inherit his uncle's wealth, is considered a suitable match by Anne's
mother, he is very persistent but is dealt with by Anne with
fortitude and ingenuity. The other two are brothers, sons of the
miller from whom Anne's widowed mother rents their home, and are
considered socially inferior. Robert is a sailor who returns after
a time away from home whom Anne has loved from her youth and has
considered herself loved in return; John ( the eponymous Trumpet
Major ) camps nearby with his regiment and demonstrates a gentle and more
steadfast love for Anne which appears to be unrequited; the
relationships between the 3 are beset with misunderstandings.
Along the way we get a taste of life for the local inhabitants, their fear of Napoleon and their excitement about the Army camp and the passing of the King's retinue on their way to Portsmouth. The book was enjoyed by all who read it.
We meet on the first Thursday of the month at 7.30 in the bar and welcome new members.
Our book choice for November is " The Sex Life of my Aunt " by Mavis Cheek.

PROJECT BAWDESWELL
At its recent meetings the Committee reluctantly agreed that the Children’s Play area equipment obtained from Coltishall cannot be re-erected in Bawdeswell. The manufacturers of this equipment, who would be willing at great expense to refurbish and install it, cannot guarantee that once done it would meet the health and safety requirements of ROSPA. We cannot proceed with that knowledge, although we do plan to try to install the slide ourselves because it is in less need of refurbishment and poses less of a health and safety problem. The equipment from Coltishall, which we can no longer use could be made available to a private citizen who may wish to install it in a back garden. If anyone is interested please contact Graham Swain 01362 688204 or David Cockburn 01362 688749.
We have registered with Entrust, which will enable us to apply to Biffawards for funding for brand new wooden equipment from Playscape.
A draft plan of a new Village Hall was tabled and discussions are taking place on how to proceed with fundraising for this. It is planned to make a presentation to the Parish Council in February on all aspects of the proposal.
Plans were also discussed for the BAG activities for half term and for a Christmas party. A Bridge course for adults has just started and table tennis is about to begin once a fortnight.
The next meeting will be on Saturday 8th November at 10am at the village hall. Join us and hear all about the various work streams and share your ideas with us.

What is “Community Speed Watch”?
Community Speed Watch (CSW) schemes arose from an idea to involve local residents in speed reduction activity in the village of Ash, Somerset. After a successful pilot in the eastern area of Norfolk, the scheme is now being rolled out county wide. Put simply, speed monitoring is carried out by trained volunteers from the community, with follow-up work on education and enforcement by Norfolk Police and your Local Authority.
Initially, letters are sent to registered keepers of offending vehicles asking for their assistance in keeping speeds down in your community, with persistent offenders targeted for police enforcement.
Isn’t this a police job?
Norfolk Constabulary is committed to achieving casualty reduction targets, and include “reducing the number of people killed and seriously injured on the road” as part of their Policing Plan. With ever-greater demand it is simply not possible to carry out speed enforcement checks in every community that wants them on a regular basis. Indeed, having to prioritise resources means that some communities that have a speeding problem without a corresponding collision record may be unlikely to see meaningful levels of enforcement. This is where working together can help.
Does it work?
In 2007 the scheme was trialled in Hopton and was quickly rolled out across a number of Parishes within the Eastern Area of the County with great success. There is no reason why this could not be as successful in other areas provided that schemes are set-up and run in accordance with guidelines developed during the trial.
Volunteers!!!
Bawdeswell needs 6 volunteers and a co-ordinator to get the scheme started. You only need to commit to 1 hour a week plus some time for the training. A copy of the Norfolk Police booklet can be downloaded from the Parish Council website at http://eoe.xarg.co.uk/bawdeswell/
Contact the Parish Clerk - Claire Boer on 07877 955745 - if you can help.
BAWDESWELL FOOTBALL CLUB.

New players and supporters are always needed for the team. For information about the club please contact Philip Duffield on (01362) 688611

BECK WI
Aleathia opened our October meeting. She then introduced our speaker, Richard Watts, who had come to talk to us about his Uncle Frank and memories of a Norfolk Life.
Richard entertained us for an unforgettable hour with stories of his Uncle Frank who was born in the village of Paston on the North Norfolk Coast and apparently never went further than 450 yards from the village during his long life.
Uncle Frank, a builder by trade, was a real Norfolk countryman with a real knowledge and pride in the local crafts. Many a story he could tell of blacksmiths, wheelwrights, carpenters, etc. Luckily, Uncle Frank left written notes and articles about rural life some 50 to 60 years ago and these memories have now been printed in three books. A most enjoyable talk.
After tea/coffee break we talked over arrangements for a visit to Norwich's Theatre in January (West Side Story) and our Christmas Dinner in December.
A pleasing result from the A.G.M. which followed - 5 committee members - Aleathia is President with members Carol, Christine, Jennifer and Margaret. Aleathia thanked Jennifer and Gill for their past help as Secretary and Treasurer.
On Monday 10th November we have Richard Wright visiting us. His subject - From pigs to oil lamps. Exhibition - Anything piggy. Hope to see you all.
Mary Humphrey.
The Iceni Choir
The Iceni Choir are privileged to have James Lilwall as their musical director and conductor. Our inaugural concert in July 2007 at Salle Church was given to a packed audience and, since then, we have received invitations to sing in various venues and festivals. Iceni’s repertoire ranges from early Church and sacred music to Broadway and popular song. There are exciting plans possibly to twin the choir with a similar choir in France during 2009. We aim to sing, perform and entertain at the highest possible level whilst still enjoying ourselves.
We are also extremely lucky to have Hannah Francis, an accomplished soprano, as our President. Hannah was invited by James to hear the choir and has since helped us with our sound by dedicating her time and experience to lessons and workshops. Hannah was a principal soprano with the English National Opera, performing widely on the international operatic platform and, as a recitalist, Hannah sings regularly in London. ELMHAM PATIENTS PARTICIPATION GROUP
YOUR CHANCE TO MAKE YOUR POINT
Yes, we know you’ve heard it before. You’ve heard it so many times, from the most unlikely people: how what you have to say is important. This time, though, it is important. At issue is the facility of dispensaries such as those at the Elmham and Swanton Morley surgeries. The question that is being asked by the government in a national consultation is whether dispensaries operated by, and earning money for, doctors is the best way of meeting patients’ needs. In this case, it will not be enough to register the view of the Elmham patient participation group: it will require the individual views of as many people as possible. One suggestion on offer in the consultation is that dispensaries might be better placed by the primary care trust which oversees all the health services in each county. Again, there could be a general shift to providing prescriptions by commercial pharmacies. There is talk of patients’ being given the choice of going directly to a chemist’s shop instead of their doctor.
The doctors at the Elmham practice argue for ‘no change’. They point to a dispensary service geared to patients scattered over 39 villages and hamlets; to the abolition of queues at the dispensary itself; to the introduction of ‘on-line’ ordering of repeat prescriptions and the delivery service of medication for patients who have difficulty getting about. You can get the details from the surgery and you have until November 20th to have your say, no matter how short. You can do it by visiting the website
http//:www.dh.gov.uk/en/Consultations/LiveConsultations/DH_087324 or by writing to: Gillian Farnfield, MPI Community Pharmacy Policy, 4th floor, Skipton House, 80 London Road, London. SE1 8LH

Banham Poultry at Great Wichingham – No Stink Campaign
Rendering Plant Pollution Prevention and Control permit Refused.
It was confirmed that the Pollution Prevention and Control permit was refused and Banhams have 6 months in which to appeal.
It was also confirmed that Banhams have, at the 11th hour, put in an appeal against the decision of Norfolk County Council to refuse the retrospective planning permission in February. Banhams have reactivated a previously withdrawn planning application for 2 buildings on the present site.
This news was given to the parish on 25th September at a meeting arranged by Gt Witchingham Parish Council at Lenwade House Hotel. Although Banham Compost Ltd were invited they declined to attend, but Keith Simpson MP, Phil Kirby (Chief Planning Officer for Broadland District Council), Nic Johnson (Planning Services Manager for Norfolk County Council), Simon Woodbridge (District Councillor) and James Joyce (County Councillor) attended. There was much debate with the meeting calling for Enforcement Action to run in conjunction with the appeal. If Banhams loose the appeal Enforcement Action would immediately be activated, thereby curtailing any further waiting to be of rid of this blot on the landscape.
WENSUM VALLEY BIRDWATCHING SOCIETY
At our indoor meeting the president of the American Ornithological Union, Professor Fred Cooke gave a very entertaining talk on the more specialised pursuit of sea-watching. Addressing the question of when to sea-watch Prof Cooke said that it is generally thought the best time is early morning, however, experience has shown that, apart from late afternoons, the number of Birds seen per hour is remarkably similar throughout the day. The direction and speed of the wind also has an influence, the highest numbers appearing when the wind is from the North West. The Professor said that sea-watching is important for surveys and there is much more to be learned about seabirds. It can be fun and relaxing but many watchers find it the hardest form of birdwatching – which we put to the test on our field trip to..….
Field Trip: Holme Birdwatching Observatory. It is one thing to sit in a warm village hall listening to the theory but the practice started at 7.0 am on a Sunday morning at Holme Dunes. Sadly the wind was non-existent and an early morning mist limited the exercise, but patience was rewarded and several species were seen including Auks and Gannets. We finished the day at Titchwell where a yellow browed warbler made an unexpected appearance.
Wild About Norfolk: Give a group of children hammers, nails and pieces of wood, show them how to make a nest box, stand back and watch as they attack the task with a passion. This was the scene (and sound) at the RSPB stand at the Norfolk Wildlife exhibition held at Notcutts Garden Centre. As one of the newer organisations our stand attracted lots of interest. We signed up new members and the RSPB finished up with a lorry load of nest boxes. Well done children!
Dates for the diary:
Indoor meeting: Our final presentation of the year is on Thursday November 20th at Weston Longville Village Hall by Dr. Mike Edgecombe entitled ‘Extreme Birding from the Roof’, a record of a bird trip to Tibet. Start 7.30, all are welcome, tea and biscuits laid on.
Field Trip: We are going further afield for our last field trip of the year. On Sunday November 23rd we will be visiting Rockingham Forest to see Red Kites.

Television – Digital Switchover
There has been a lot of misleading information recently about the Digital Switchover for Television . Don’t be conned – it needn’t be too costly. Here are some facts.
· What - Starting in 2008 and ending in 2012, TV services in the UK will go completely digital. This process is called digital switchover. The UK’s old television broadcast signal is being switched off and replaced with a “digital” signal. Any TV set that’s not converted to digital when the switchover takes place will no longer receive TV programmes.
· How - Every TV set you want to keep watching in your home will need to be converted or upgraded to digital.
· When – 2011 in East Anglia so you have over 2 years to prepare. However, you can convert any time you want to as all the alternatives are available now.
· How Much - Digital set top boxes are now available for less than £20 plus the cost of a connecting lead.
· Help - Digital UK is aware that switchover can be daunting. If you need help call them on 0845 6 50 50 50. You are eligible for a Help Scheme if you are: Aged 75 or over, or receiving certain disability benefits or registered blind or partially sighted.

The Benefice will be visited on November16th by the Bishop of Lynn. He will attend services at Foxley at 8am, Elsing at 9am, Bawdeswell at 10.30 and Lyng at 3pm.
He will also be coming to a bring and share lunch at Lyng village hall on the Sunday, to which all are welcome.

Have you ever thought of visiting the Diocesan website? If you would like to know more about the issues of marriage and the new rules do look it up on:
Some people have tried to contact the Rector using his old e-mail address. This address is now no longer in use. Do please check that you have his new address as mentioned above.
Events for November are:
8th Friends of Bawdeswell Church Harvest Supper with Keith Loads
15th Autumn Fair Lyng village hall 2pm
16th Bishop James’ Autumn Visitation
The new organ has been installed and the voicing and balancing carried out. We are very much indebted to Dr Gerald Gifford, the renowned organ recitalist and friend, who has shown so much interest in our project and helped in the setting up of the organ. We look forward to his demonstration concert on Sunday 14th December at 4pm – a demonstration of the organ’s capabilities.
We hope you will come along.
There will be a slightly different pattern of services and events at All Saints’ Church this year – full details will be in next month’s Reeve’s Tale.
On Sunday 7th December at 4.00 pm the Friends of Bawdeswell Church have arranged their annual Christmas Concert, including the choir Iceni this year.
On Sunday 21st December at 10.30 we will have our Carol Service, an opportunity to bring all the family to sing your favourite carols and to see the children’s Nativity Play.
On Wednesday 24th December (Christmas Eve) we will have the Blessing of the Crib and Christmas communion service at 9.00 pm. This is earlier than the traditional time for Midnight Mass and we hope it will be just as popular. Everyone is welcome to this celebration of the birth of Jesus.
On Christmas Day (Thursday) at 1030 there will be our now traditional Christmas GiG, a short service especially for the children but at which all ages will find a welcome.
ST.THOMAS’ CHURCH, FOXLEY
Foxley’s Harvest Festival was rather late this year, but we were blessed with a bigger congregation from the whole benefice, and, moreover, a stunningly beautiful Autumn day. We could really feel truly thankful as the sun streamed through the windows and we sang the old Harvest hymns, ending the service with “Fill our hearts with joy and gladness” set to the tune of Beethoven’s “Ode to joy”.
There was a superabundance of apples, huge marrows and a massive pumpkin. Vic Gathergood headed the procession of offerings to the altar with this symbol of a fruitful harvest, accompanied by his daughters Alisha and Jenny with baskets of apples and pears. These little girls also helped by handing out the hymnbooks – another blessing – to have some children in our church!
The Rector, David Head, arranged the informal One More Step service and gave a fascinating talk about combines and combinations. ( I can’t do it justice in a few words!). John Fletcher was at the organ and there were readings of appropriate poetry as well as the Bible readings. Much chatter followed along with the coffee and biscuits.
Mr. Geoff Hemmings collected the produce the next day, as usual, to be used at the Reepham Day Centre, where elderly and disabled people enjoy a sociable day and lunches each Wednesday.
I do hope we get a good turnout on 3rd. December for our annual Childrens’ Society Coffee Morning. In the light of recent events, children and families may well need even more support in the future.

From the Rector
Dear Everybody, hello again,
You will probably have heard on the news that marrying in the church of your choice is going to get easier. It’s not automatic, but it is a lot easier. If you’ve got a strong family tie, or have lived in the place yourself for six months, at any time, there is no problem. The Archbishop’s Special Licence, which some of you have had, will not be necessary. You now have to “demonstrate a qualifying connection”.
In the very old days, when people didn’t move around a lot, you just married in the church of the place to which you belonged. But now, people belong in places in quite a different way. You’ll find people grow up in one place, work in another, and retire to a third. Which is their home? A very mobile friend of mine once started a poem: “Of the eighty-one places I have called home…”
The change in the regulations is a response to the fact that fewer people were marrying in church. They did not feel that they belonged to the church where they lived. Now, there is an element of choice. You can - within reason - choose which church you belong to for the weddings of your family for unbroken generations.
True, marriage is not about where you belong, but who you belong to. But it’s also true, that marriage is about our whole family, and can include a sense of belonging in a certain place. On Remembrance Day, we remember people who died, usually abroad, for their country, in the place where they belonged. A sense of place can be very deep.
But once marriage has happened, the big choice is made. As soon as you belong together, that choice is over. What then happens is that then a whole series of little choices that you face determine the quality of the relationship of the person you most belong to. In making it easier for people to marry in a church that makes sense to them, the church is trying to stress that God belongs in a marriage too, if you will have him.
God bless you. David Head
