FOXLEY SOCIAL CLUB
The committee would like to express their belated apologies for the last minute cancellation on the 11th July of Mrs. Sue Lilwall’s talk on The Chelsea Experience. We understand the disappointment this caused; but Mrs. Lilwall had recently undergone surgery on her knees, and had not recovered as thoroughly as she had hoped. I’m sure we can all identify with that situation, and send her our wishes for a satisfactory recovery.
As a last minute stand-in we were fortunate to engage the services of Mr. Eric Hill who has a studio at North Tuddenham where he makes sticks. He brought along samples of his many different types of walking-sticks and hiking-sticks all made from a great range of woods and in many different shapes; there were even some with inset handles of horn and antler. He talked us through the intricacies of his craft which he took up after his retirement, and his enthusiasm and love of his work was quite apparent to us all.
The club’s next speakers were on the 25th July, when we were entertained by Mr. and Mrs. Geoffrey Hodson: “Hodson’s Choice”. Drawing on their vast experience in the theatre (both local and countrywide) we were treated to readings from poems and prose, and anecdotes from their past times all relating to the human state both humorous and tragic. It was an hour of knowing smiles.
The club held it’s A.G.M. on the 8th August. The committee was retained, and various subjects were discussed, the most salient subject being the continuation of the club. Over the past months the attendance has gradually dwindled to the point where finding the cost of the hall rental and the speakers has become harder and harder. It was, therefore, with great regret decided, on a show of hands, to wind up the club at Christmas. The programme of speakers will, of course, be honoured up to then.
Having written the above paragraph some two or three weeks ago, the Chair has just heard that the club’s next speaker, Mr John Balls will not be able to appear on the 5th September as the poor fellow has contracted diabetes along with some at the moment undiagnosed condition for which he is undergoing hospital tests. I am sure all our thoughts are with him. S.B.
The club will be holding a Christmas celebration on Friday 14th December at the Cliftonville Hotel, Gorleston. There will be a three course silver service Christmas lunch (varied menu), cabaret and afternoon dancing. The coach will leave Foxley Village Hall at 11.30 am, and return at 5.30—6 pm. There are a few seats available for £22. 00. all inclusive. Those interested should contact the Social Secretary on 688 260.
